Many people treat the Battles of the Seven Days like Union defeats, but only one of the battles was a Confederate Victory.

McClellan just treated them like defeats. He told lincoln after the Battles of the Seven Days, "I did not lose, I just failed to win." Smiley

Lincoln once said about McClellan, "He could snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory." Cheesy

StatesRights, since you are such a Billy Reb you should really like McClellan. Cheesy

He has to be the only General in history who would have the enemies battle plan but not attack until the enemy was fortified.

I am a Johnny Reb. Soulty is a BillyReb. Wink I like Mac because he was a excellent organizer and was actually better for the job of Quartermaster General.

An important thing to remember is that Abe had a much greater "margin of error" than Jeff Davis, thanks to the massive material advantages the north enjoyed while for the south the margin of error was very slim indeed, looking at the alternatives Davis was probably the best choice for the CSA and I can't think of anyone who might have done a better job, of course he should have been less confident of folks like Bragg and Hood and more trusting of Johnston and Beauregard but looking at relations with generals Lincoln was just as bad (I mean between 1861 and 1864 Lincoln sacked seven commanders of the Army of the Potomac in succession and was never above interfering, that said he did have better timing than Davis).

Davis's biggest problem in my opinion was his big ego. He hated P.G.T. Beuregard, and made it known. Lincoln said that he would hold McClellan's horse if he would bring victroies. I could never imagine Jefferson Davis saying that about P.G.T. Beuregard.
