The funniest part of this is the last paragraph:

What is it with Republicans and guns?

"Everybody run!  The Vice President's got a gun!"  (To be sung to the tune of The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun.)

Hooooo - It was another debate in New Hampshire
Hooooo - Everyone was there, except Stephen Colbert
Hooooo - I was real excited, I almost lost my bling
Hooooo - 'Cause my best friend Cheney was moderating

He looked so dour remembering Enron, Enron
Riding the float with his pacemaker on, pacemaker on
Holding this humongous briefcase in his hand, briefcase
He looked straight out of Disneyland

You know, like the Hall of Presidents, I mean definitely an A ticket, A ticket
The crowd was cheering, everyone was stoked, was stoked
I mean it was like the party was totally coked or something
The band was playing Evergreen
And all of a sudden somebody screamed

Look out!  The Vice President's got a gun!

{Refrain}
Everybody run, the Vice President's got a gun
Everybody run, the Vice President has got a gun

Cheney's smiling and waving his gun
Picking off commentators one by one
Oh Katie's theme song just blew to bits
Oh no, Brian's mike just did the splits
God, my best friend's on a shooting spree
Stop it, Cheney, you're embarrassing me
How could you do what you did cowpoke
Are you having a really bad stroke?

{Refrain}

Stop Cheney, you're making a mess
Powder burns all over your address

An hour later the cops arrived
By then the entire press corps had died, no big loss
You wouldn't believe what they brought to stop her
Tear gas, machine guns, even a chopper
"Throw down your gun and pacemaker and come out of the undisclosed location"
Cheney didn't listen to what the cop said
He aimed and fired and now the front runner's dead
Oh it's really sad but kind of a relief
I mean, we had a new one coming up next week

{Refrain}

Cheney's really having a blast
He's wasting half of the class

The cops fired a warning shot that blew him off the float
I tried to scream "duck" but it stuck in my throat
He hit the ground and did a flip, it was real acrobatic
But I was crying so hard I couldn't work my Instamatic
I ran down to Cheney, I had to find out
What made him do it, why'd he freak out
I saw the bullet had got him right in the ear
I knew then the end was near

So I ran down and I said, in his good ear, "Cheney, why'd you do it?" He raised her head, smiled, and said "I - I did it for Ronnie."

Sounds like Tancredo has a bit of a crush on Mr. Romney.

Romney should take him up on this one. The Rockies are going to be swept.

Now, trap shooting.... That Romney can shoot.. .

Tancredo's obviously just looking for a unique, exciting reason to leave the race. "Fund raising concerns" and "spending more time with the family" just aren't exciting enough in this YouTube, 24/7, connected generation.

Tancredo obviously knows that Romney is going to turn down the bet, because why would any candidate with a credible chance at the nomination take such a bet?  Romney would be ridiculed for risking his candidacy on something like that, even if his odds of success were extremely good.

Tancredo, on the other hand, doesn't risk anything, because he doesn't have a serious chance at the nomination anyway.  This is just a way for him to get his name in the news.

These sorts of news are funny to me.

We can not imagine such thing in France... a candidate that proposes a bet like that for the nomination...!!! In my country not anyone would even think about doing it.

Some sides of USA policy seems to be funny.

Hey, we're hilarious. It's like H.L. Mencken said... American politics resembles a three-ring circus more than it does a sober deliberative body.

It's not serious, and certainly minor politicians in France pull dumb stunts like this, too. They do everywhere (think George Galloway, people).

I was serious, concerning the presidency election, and even the other elections, not any candidate could even think about saying such a thing in media and even if he would try to do, just after he will have to say: "dont' worry, it's a joke, i'm not serious".

Until now french policy was quite very serious, and most of all about president. Until now french presidents were considered as very important peoples, i consider that it has good and it has bad but anyway it's an other thing that Sarkozy wants to change...

I doubt Tancredo will make it to Christmas anyway, so it's not a big deal.

Maybe Tancredo should bet on something else, like whether his xenophobic dream world will ever become law in the US.  He'd have to drop out immediately.

You're comparing Tancredo to French candidates actually running to win. Think about whether an obscure candidate would have pulled a stunt like this, not whether Segolene Royal or Francois Bayrou would have.

Sorry to persist in but before answering you I searched in my memory, and I didn't find such a thing or something that could be close of this bet in France.

Try to look in french policy archives if ever you want. You could find peoples who say enormous thing, as big as their stupidity, but never one that proposes to play with the policy like that. Like I said, until now french policy was considered as a verry serious thing, and people that were in always spoke in a serious style. The humor of the french policy was located in the private jokes and some public witticisms (I found this word by a translator, I hope it's good). A sort of discret and very corosive humor, and sometimes french politicians use to much about it in medias, instead of making usefull declarations.

Anyway, about the until now serious of the policy of France, maybe it's my country that is particular, i don't know...

Each country has his features, even if it's less and less, there is still a few in each...

P.S.: Congratulations! You remembered the name of François Bayrou, in France quite everybody has forgoten him, unluckily to me cause it was the one I prefered.

Actually the Russians made a similar bet during the Crimean war. Essentially, they suggested that instead of fighting a battle, it would make more sense for the war to be decided by a game of chess. Rumour has it that the French and the British considered taking the Russians up on their challenge until someone realised that there was no way they could hold the Russians to their side of the bargain.

Well, you said it's a rumour, it was a russian proposition, it was a battle so it could have permit to keep life of men what is a not an asked question in a democratic battle, crimean war is far now, and anyway since it France has changed.

If an other people wanna challenge to find a bet like the one of Tancredo in France political history, he's welcome.

Anyway thancks for this historical recall.

My mistake - after reading the book with the reference it was far less dramatic. The area in question was a hill on Sebastopol - part of the battle - certainly not the whole war. The 'bet' was proposed by an officer to his superior, who seriously considered it and then decided against taking the idea further.

When the British invaded Abysinnia in 1868 the ruler of Abysinnia proposed to settle the matter by single combat.
