I've always wondered what the exact definition of a troll is.

Would SomeLawStudent fit the definition?

Why would he be considered a troll?

The definition I'm familiar with is an internet persona that can be either genuine or phoney, but one who uses various methods to incite a flamewar.  For example, this could be by exaggerating their views or deliberately adopting a false one just to get a rise out of people and start an argument.

The best way to think of it is to remember that "troll" in the internet sense actually derives from a fishing term.  Trolls are in a sense "fishing" for a fight.

Would SomeLawStudent fit the definition?

He seems more like a disingenuous anti-intellectual to me, but aren't we all when the facts don't fit our opinions?

Not at all. I remember he made some interesting, constructive comments on a lingustics thread in the OT board some time ago.

I'd brand this fellow a borderline troll.  Mr. Duke, that is.

Whoa - that clears up so much. I had always thought troll was referring to those big hair things that live under bridges.

Now it actually makes sense. Thanks Joe Cheesy

Just because you don't agree with his opinions doesn't make him a troll.  Believe me, we have only one definite troll on the board, and he currently ranks #1 in total posts and polls created.  Smiley

I think of trolls as those who seem to have a desperate need to be disliked and hated, and then piss and cry and moan that no one likes them.

I will leave it to the community to determine if anyone here fits that description.

Opebo is a troll. Straha was a troll. BRTD often acts like a troll, although I don't think he is one. Jamespol is probably too clueless to be a troll, but he could just be a joke. Same goes for Stark: just stupid, not actually trolling. Vanderblubb is a troll. Some posters who shall remain anonymous act troll-like from time to time.

SomeLawStudent is not one.

No, those are homeless people. The trolls moved out because goats don't cross bridges often enough these days to make ends meet.

HAHAHA! Thank you, Eraserhead, authority of all on this internet forum. How powerful you must feel to be able to deem people worthy posters or trolls. A cookie for you! Maybe one day you can run for virtual President and get the love and support of all your virtual friends!

How am I a "troll?" Is it because I don't agree with you on most things? Is it because I'm a Republican that actually supports the party. It seems like that is the prerequisite. I honestly don't understand how this site talks about expanding its member base yet it labels posters trolls if they seem like they aren't either self-hating Republicans who love Obama or haven't accepted Obama as their savior. Someone on here asked me if I had gotten a thread dedicated to me proclaiming I was a troll yet because I was a partisan Republican on a forum full of partisan Democrats.

I wouldn't call him a troll. Sure, he's not very smart, and he's probably lying about "having a law degree from a top school," and he did manage to turn about five threads into multi-page flame wars in less than 24 hours, and... well, maybe he is a troll. Hmm...
