Strangely, I hope this is a one off. If the army run amok, Bob will just take his millions and piss off into exile leaving the opposition to take the bullets.

With the kind of economy Zimbabwe has the government was bound to run out of money at some point, and when soldiers don't get paid you'd expect them to do something like this. So  not really surprising at all.

I really think a well executed coup by Zimbabwean natives, with help from South Africa and various western nations, could work.

But who is most likely to stage such a coup? It couldn't be Morgan Tsangari, nor his supporters as they'd be slaughtered by supporters of the Mugabe Government, and most of them are in authoritative positions such as the military and police. Thus, if you remove Tsangari and his supporters from the equation, none of the Zimbabwean natives would in their right minds would stage such a coup against Mugabe.

You also bring up South Africa helping stage such a coup? Haha. If the Government of South Africa does not criticise the murderous bastard known as Robert Gabriel Mugabe, only doing so as early as this year thanks to pressure from the West, I cannot see the South Africans helping stage a coup to rid of Iron Bob.

*sigh* you just don't get it. Seriously.

Go do some reading on the modern history of Africa and then see if you can honestly say that having some of Mugabe's cronies oust him is going to cause a massive improvement. Roughly 95% of African coups result in Thug A being ousted by Thug B.

Also your outline of how this would be conducted is hilariously naive.

To be fair on the coup discussions, the former commander of the military, Soloman Mujuru has been making overtures to the opposition since he failed to oust Mugabe in favor of his wife, Vice President Joyce Mujuru back in 2007. A number of his supporters have been purged, and current c-o-c Constantine Chiwanga is a partisan of former Security Minister Emerson Mnengaga, but he may have enough force to pull it off.

Oddly enough both factions have been sending overtures to the United States over the last three years, and it is their division that keeps Mugabe in office. I agree that Morgan Tsangerai has no place in a potential military regime, but the other wing of the MDC led Arthur Mutambara would likely be included for window dressing. That would probably be enough for the US, which has never cared much for Tsangerai and his wing of the MDC, to drop sanctions.
