Because it's not a real election. It's an attempt by Karzai at wholesale purchasing of "legitimacy". LOL.

You are such a moron. The Afghanistan invasion was supposed to be "perfect". Your precious UN oversaw everything and is in charge of overseeing these elections.

You fools are never satisfied are you?

Election appears to have been quite irregular, but at least turnout was high.

Current results don't seem to include most of the provinces, so it's relatively useless so far. I believe the counting stations are relatively centralized, so whole provinces probably won't be counted for days.

And about the whole permenant ink thing, I knew there would be some fudgying around. If Gore did what the 15 candidates did in 2000 in FL, he would have picked up at least NH.

By the way, does the front page of the afghan election site blink for everyone else? It's highly annoying but I don't know if it's a Mozilla issue for me or a conscious choice on their part. I thought the blink tag died a slow and painful death years ago.

I don't see the blink. What's the URL for the page that you get it on?

I don't see blinking anywhere in the source code. Must be a Mozilla bug.

It's in the stylesheet, http://www.afg-electionresults.org/english/talbe.css which applies to the page, I think. Looks like it's on purpose.

Part of a good exit strategy in Afghanistan should consist of legally banning the use of the BLINK tag. Heck, the same goes for the U.S.

That and marquees.

No problems.
The partial results by province, if not very definite, are certainly entertaining. Karzai at 95+ in the old Taliban/Pashtu strongholds. Three-way race between Karzai, Dostam and Qanuni in the Tajik and Uzbek North. Racial voting (Pashtus Karzai, Tajiks Qanuni) in Kabul.

Edit: Ethnic o/c, not racial.

Karzai looks to be lucky there isn't a major regional candidate from Herat.

The following map may be of interest -- I'm not sure if there's an ethnic reason for Qanooni to be ahead in Ghor province, but the matchup between Qanooni and Tajiks, Dostum and Uzbeks, Karzai and Pushtu, and Mohaqiq and Hazara is pretty straightforward. Based on the ethnic balance of Afghanistan, though, Karzai must be getting crossover votes to be getting a majority, though. Especially since I assume that most of whatever Taliban supporters are opposed to the election would be Pushtuns.

Ismail Khan, the Lion of Herat, has been avoiding natonal politics like the plague but dominating his own region by playing the Iranians and Americans off each other. As Karzai grows more powerful, he may decide that a major cabinet position is the better part of valor. It wouldn't  be anyone but Khan.

More competitive than expected. At least as fair as a New Mexico Governor's race...in the Democratic north, that is. Wink

Good to see Mohaqiq beating out Dostum for 3rd!
