The Inheritance of Rome: Illuminating the Dark Ages

It looks interesting, but the commentary has been mixed. I've read one glowing review, one negative review, one savage "review," and two predictably unhelpful Amazon "reviews." (Except... could Wickham seriously have failed to mention the Battle of Poitiers?)

Wickham's a pretty respected and eminent academic and a fellow of All Souls College at Oxford (not a prize fellow, but it's pretty difficult to be any sort of fellow there) so i'd imagine in terms of its scholarly quality, the book should be at least decent (albeit i believe written for a 'general' rather than 'scholarly' audience, emphasis on quotation marks). Pretty sure he's a Marxist though, so you may find yourself not liking his approach.
