Was just thinking about the old days when Gully would bash the nostalgia industry.  Haven't seen him rant that way lately.  Those were classic posts, we don't get stuff like that anymore.

Yeah. Those were the golden days. Ah, how I love to just sit, smoke a pipe and reminisce about those posts.

Ah yes. Those rants. I miss them well enough. Does anyone miss the days when I use to have posts without any irony in them? Those were the days..

I do, which is one of think that Mike Naso is one of the best posters here.  In an age of cynicism, he defiantly shows no hint of artifice or irony.  Naso shows tremendous balls just by being himself, while most of us try to distance ourselves through layers of sarcasm and irony.  Naso is the anti-hipster.

I often think there is no 'self' to disguise myself (or oneself). All there is, is sarcasm and irony.

Agreed on Naso. Though by being so himself he does come across as a character in a film by a bad David Lynch impersonator.

Naso has no filter. I wish I could be like him sometimes. Instead, I live vicariously through imagined conversations and thus always see myself in the third person.

Let's be honest.

I was in the Military. I wanted to stay 20 years, I could only stay 4 months. But I did it. I took the physical and mental aspects for what they are...but I'll tell ya this much...had it been 1973 like when my father was in, the 11:57 min run which I collapsed on my 9th week there, would have been a 22 minute run that my father passed in 1973 which I easily made my first week there.

Basically...I collapsed due to extra physical requirements and pushing myself too hard. While searching to make sure I was alright, they found a tiny membrane heart defect which doesn't require surgery or a lifestyle change but that prevented me from continuing to serve.

The truth and fact of the matter is...if it was 30 years ago...I'd be in the U.S. Air Force right now on my way to a 20 year career.

But it isn't. It's 2010 and now I have 10 job applications out and haven't heard back from one. This economy is in the toilet and we have a very weak and indecisive President which only makes matters worse.

If it was 1980, work conditions would be no better...if not even worse under the leadership of President Jimmy Carter.

The songs on the radio at this moment 30 years ago included:

Let My Love Open The Door - Pete Townshend
Against the Wind - Bob Seger
Call Me - Blondie

20 years ago:

King Of Wishful Thinking - Go West
It Must Have Been Love - Roxette
All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You - Heart

Here's the sad part...my first memories are from the Summer of 1990...I remember my baby sister in the car-seat next to me hearing these songs on the radio. My baby sister now has her own baby in a car-seat.

Now, 10 years ago...songs playing at this moment then included:

Oops… I Did It Again - Britney Spears
Absolutely (Story Of A Girl) - Nine Days
I Try - Macy Gray

This is scary. A decade ago at this time those songs were playing and it seems like yesterday.

Can't stop the clock though...times change.

Alejandro - Lady Gaga
Rude Boy - Rihanna
Young Forever - JayZ

Has music gotten worse? You decide.

Movies...

June 20, 1980: The Blues Brothers w/Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi
June 20, 1990: Another 48 HRS. w/Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy
June 20, 2000: Me, Myself and Irene w/Jim Carrey
June 20, 2010: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time?

Which do you prefer?

What's better? Bill Clinton, a strong economy, Matchbox 20, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? or Barack Obama, a horrible economy, Lady Gaga and "Jon and Kate"?

Things aren't all bad nowadays. After all, if it wasn't 2010 I couldn't be typing this to y'all right now....but sometimes too much "change" is a bad thing. Nothing wrong with tradition. I guess if you look at it that way, change itself is a tradition.

I report, you decide.

The rise and fall of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire is one of the stranger things that I've ever seen on television.

Somebody won the million dollars and the character objective for the series was fulfilled.

Wasn't that like a couple weeks ago?  You could probably find the thread in the first few pages on here if you're really jonesin' for one.

Oh, wait.  I understand now.  Wink

In any case, the nostalgia post was a little hard to wrap my head around.  I could have just as easily agreed or disagreed with him and still walked away shaking my head in grief.

Oh and the pop music of 2000 was much worse than it is today IMO.  Today isn't very good, but 2000 was just awful. It was that point of the decade where we lacked identity.

Yeah, the early 2000s were a lowpoint for music, art, style etc. There were a few good albums like Kid A, and Yankee Foxtrot Hotel that were popular. As far as mainstream entertainment is concerned the last 5 years have been all progress.

Breaking Bad, Weeds, Mad Men, The Office, Dexter etc for tv shows. There's been the recent popularity of "indie" bands and better pop music. Fashion wise douchebag-wear has become much less popular. Overall I'd say that the late 2000s weren't bad at all.
