Bush - 60,358,656
Kerry - 56,931,166

Wow - The numbers keep rising....

Kerry might top 57,000,000 and lose by 3+ million...

This is rather surprising turnout - the "conventional wisdom" was 60%, but looks like with all the spoiled ballots, absentee vote, etc might be closer to 62% or so

The voting age population this year is estimated to be 221.3 million people. The voting eligible population is estimated to be 203.9 million people. The current total of votes for President on the Atlas page is 118.5 million. I get a VAP turnout of 53.5%. If I restrict to the turnout of the VEP it only gets to 58.1%. That's better than 2000 and 1996, but below the turnout in 1992.

How does one get a turnout of over 60% from these numbers?

There are also about 4 million +/- "non votes" where people spoilded their ballot, voted incorrectly, etc...

I always find it amazing that 2%+ can fill a ballot out properly...

Mind you... 25% +/- are functionally illiterate.. so I guess it follows...

As I posted elsewhere, I would be careful about counting spoiled ballots. With most electronic or scanning voting systems, the spoiled ballots are now detected at the polling place, and the voter may cast another ballot. Counting those ballots would be double-counting some voters.

Also, in order to compare 2004 to previous elections, I think we must use the same type of data in both cases. Since older turnouts are calculated as total votes for the office divided by VAP, then we have to do the same this year.

They'll only count the spoiled ballots in places where the systems are non-electronic and are the old punch-card system (for example, most of Ohio).  They also have rules for that.

It seems to me that the numbers are actually falling.  The last count I've seen for several days until this post is...

Bush  -  60,418,140
Kerry -  56,949,003

I'm not sure why the numbers have gone down in several states.  I thought provisional ballots were not included in the count until they had been approved.

Ummm, only 1 ballot would go in the pile of ballots to be counted, obviously.

Correct, but states with electronic checks, such as IL, quote a number for spoiled ballots. None will be counted, because voters should have been given an opportunity to cast a valid ballot. Spoiled ballots don't apply as votes made but uncounted in that case.
