Didn't Romney try to shut down the U.S. weather service in favor of one of his donors who couldn't compete? That was a small government initiative.

As Torie notes, this was the work of State College-based AccuWeather.

He is basically the epitome of a Bush Republican.

Yes -- a big-government right-winger, a socialist for the rich, a reckless drainer of the Treasury, just like Dubya. Rick Santorum is a right-wing authoritarian populist, a semi-fascist demagogue who shows contempt for homosexuals, feminists, and eggheads -- and who knows what else. I can easily imagine him, like Dubya, initiating a war for profit or control of oil, on some shabby pretext. I don't trust him with my civil liberties even if I am straight and nominally Christian.

War is the ultimate creator of big deficits -- and if anyone wants to impose sanity with the budget one of the first things to do is to limit wars to declared wars, wars and military actions approved by international organizations (UN, NATO, OAS), short-term maneuvers in response to immediate threats, or wars in response to multilateral treaties.  Such would not have stopped American involvement in WWI, WWII, the Korean War,  the Cuban Missile Crisis, the invasions of Grenada or Panama, aid to Kosovo, or Desert Storm. Dubya could have probably gotten a declared war for Afghanistan. National sovereignty of the US and its allies is worthy of defense,  but aggression and bungled wars aren't.

It was Santorum who wanted to shut down the national weather service.

Right--I was thinking of Santorum but that is a heck of a mix-up on my part.

Honestly, the idea that modern Republicans are in any way "small government" was discredited when Conservative Jesus aka Ronald Reagan exploded the federal budget deficit and increased the federal bureaucracy. Also, the fact is, the Religious Right is not "small-government" on all matter of issues.

"Small government" really is code for "don't spend money on helping the poor, give it to the already rich" instead. All of the Republicans running endorse that (except for Ron Paul, who actually IS a "small government conservative", and for that, will forever be not viable).
