Saw this on my News Feed. For privacy's sake, I have changed the names to "Dumb Person #"

Dumb Person 1 (original status)Sad It's a Christmas tree not a holiday tree what happened to freedom of religion. The government is going to hell

Dumb Person 2: Yes! In many schools across the country, students can't say the Pledge of Allegiance because of the words "under God". It's ludicrous, the way our government and courts of law think. (Although perhaps "going to h" is a little extreme!) Really, if you can't stand calling it a Christmas tree, then don't put up a tree!

Dumb Person 1: Obama is saintin he already has his place in hell

Dumb Person 3: Watch, in a few decades it'll be illegal to be Christian like it once was

Dumb Person 2: Not only Obama, but also the court judges and those who insist on suing against those who exercise freedom of religion. (I may be biased, but it seems that they only target Christianity). It seems that our country is being inexorably dragged in the wrong direction.

Dumb Person 1: That's because Obama is Muslim they (not being racist) tend to hate Christians

Dumb Person 4: very true he was mentored by muslims, marxists, and communists. and his father was a muslim

Dumb Person 1: Thank you for agreeing

obviously they are (from our perspective) a bunch of fools and it is easy to mock them, but I have become averse to scorn in general.

I am guessing they are all old people, commenting on your local Republican Clubs facebook group? In my area, it is the same, but more about Obama trying to kill Israel.

Putrid, what a bunch of morons.  The person who is completely unable to look outside the bubble in which they live is among the worst kind.  Its sad when you can read a convo between 4 people and between them they cannot get ONE THING RIGHT.  Seriously, everything they are presenting as fact is demonstrably false.

Ah, indeed.  Well, it probably does say something about the parents.  Had I said something so ignorant as a child I might have been slapped across the face, and most people I grew up with did not have have parents that would let such stupidity reign.

What age are these ghastly little bastards?

They've hit a level of self-awareness where this kind of ignorant buffoonery is no longer acceptable.  Somebody get the kids a book.

I love it when people mix up "losing" and "loosing" - I picture this as like saying "Cry 'freedom' and let slip the dogs of liberty!"

Obviously the tone of xenophobia and the incorrect facts are distasteful, but I do generally agree with the spirit of what they're saying. Guess I'll be shat on for it, but I don't like that most things coming from the government can't have the word "Christmas" on them. I think it's patronizing and disrespectful.

In Ontario, the City of Mississauga puts on numerous festivals in the month of December, but not one of them has the word Christmas in its title... even though everyone knows that's what the festivals are for. My old elementary school used to put on a Christmas lunch with turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes... it's now a "holiday" lunch, despite the angels, Christmas trees, and reindeer that decorate the gym. Even my immigrant friends think it's patronizing to dress up what is obviously a Christmas celebration as some sort of generic holiday event.

So yeah. I think we oughta be allowed to call things what they are instead of being forced to comply with institutionalized religion-blindness. I'd be totally happy participating in an Eid celebration or something of the sort too... but I don't like that our government seems to promote this idea of walking on eggshells around minorities. They can handle it.

Institutionalized religious blindness was a principle the country was founded on! (not sure about Canada, you tell me).  You can call your lunch "Christmas lunch".  You can call your town's celebration a "Christmas" festival if you like.  Why do need the requisite authority's official declaration of this slapped onto it?

I just don't get the arrogance of some Christians where it's to the point that it's no longer enough for them to acknowledge their holiday, they need EVERYBODY else to do the same simply because a majority of people celebrate it.  Majority =/= everybody, another fundamental principle.  I support the right for a small town or a small business to acknowledge Christmas with a display, cards, lights, etc.  But when my government gets involved in the celebration, I get annoyed.  (And yes, in your case, government includes public schools and possibly displays in front of government buildings)  I agree with the federal holiday status on practicality alone.  Any recognition beyond that is completely in the hands of the private citizen, and if you are so insecure that your conscious well-being depends upon your government's proclamation of how wonderful your religious beliefs are... well, now you're just being an ass.

Friend of mine who is a gun-nut reacting to Costas's commentary on the Chiefs player murder/suicide..

"Another typical liberal dipsh**t spouting nonsensical, reactionary hot air calling implying that the mere _ownership_ of a gun was responsible for the death of two people. Please tell me some of you people don't actually believe this nonsense. Good god, this country is going to hell."

Apparently he doesn't understand that if we had stricter laws stopping mentally ill people from buying guns, this would not have happened.

No other holiday really involves decorating trees, so let's call it what it is.  It's a Christmas tree.

A sidenote: I come from a very conservative, family values-oriented (and thus heavily Republican, though there are other reasons) community, and we always recited the Pledge of Allegiance every morning in elementary and middle school.  When I reached high school, however, we never recited the Pledge before class or any other time.
