The La Follette campaign in 1924 only finished third place, winning only one state. But it was the first time that the entire American Left had united behind one candidate. The Socialists, the Farmer-Labor Party, progressives from the larger parties, and the AFL all stood in the same camp, which also included African-Americans and feminists. And they had all done so with remarkable enthusiasm. So, even after La Follette's death in 1925, it was clear that all of the various political factions should merge. And they did, officially founding the Progressive Party in 1925. Now, they're holding 1928 convention, and there are many candidates in the running. Senator George W. Norris appears to be the clear frontrunner, though.
