"Why do we need such hospitals?" he said. "If people are ill, they can come to Ashgabat."

This reminds me of many arguments Philip has made.

Whatever the case if there was anyone world leader who needed to be capped, this guy is it.

When did this Philip guy make such arguments?

Philip's said literally thousands of things like that. He changed his name to Ace... look up his account.

BTW, he's actually quite funny.

He basically said on driver's licenses "what's the point of having them? It's in people's best interests not to drive if they can't safely anyway. It's just a way for states to tax us."

Gay marriage: "gays have equal rights because they can marry people of the opposite sex like everyone else"

Allowing Congress to say that the Supreme Court can't overturn any of the laws it passes: "If Congress gets too tyrannical the states can just secede anyway"

I agree with all of those statements, but I'm not sure what they have to do with closing down hospitals everywhere except the capital.

He's basically saying certain things are needed because other options that are available that are either ridiculously difficult to do, don't work, or simply won't work in that case. Just like here. People in rural Central Asia probably can't get to the capital too easily.

Philip also thinks that there should be a branch of the legislature that only people who own at least 1/5 of an acre of land should be able to vote for.

The world needs one crazy tinpot dictator to make fun of.

Turkmenbashi is the Tinpot Dictator of the Decade...

Just as Bokassa was the Tinpot Dictator of the 70's...
...and Stalin was the Not-So-Tinpot-Dictator of the 30's...

And So Forth.

Why does the BBC need to include this line:

"The order, announced by a government spokesman, is part of the president's radical health care policies."

Do we really care about what sort of filthy propaganda some totalitarian b*****d puts forward? Does the BBC need this concession to keep its precious Ashkabad bureau? So does CNN... Whatever you can say about Fox, they don't repeat the lies of the world's worst dictators, and consequently have no bureaus in Tehran, Damascus, or Havana.

Of course, when the BBC wrote about Israel or Iraq in the old days, that was all you saw for entire articles. And the rest of the column was quite strongly worded (though of course never lost its precious objectivity... just because the Turkmenbashi isn't like us, doesn't mean we're more right!)

And yes, the man's a nutcase.

Y'all forgot to mention this part:

"At the same time, the president has also ordered the closure of rural libraries, saying they are pointless because village Turkmens do not read."

Ya know who is the strong ally of this guy? Iran. Yes, the mullahs in Iran support him. Just something to remember the next time the Euro and American left blasts the U.S. for being hostile to Iran...

No leftists like Iran, we just don't trust Bush to do anything. Not to mention invading Iran is:

1-basically impossible at this point
2-not worth it, since the government will probably collapse on its own and the US would just muck things up.

1st sentence: that's what I thought...pfft. Typical lefty. Smiley
Point 1: it would be very difficult
Point 2: counting on internal rebellion is a possibility...which is why I mentioned that bit on Sistani's influence in Iran (yes, Iran, not Iraq) some days back in another thread...I wonder about that, and if it could be put to use.
