Hate to bump this, but WHY?!  Both were fiscal liberals and one was a racist...

StatesRights hasn't been active on the forum since 2010, but he was basically a neo-confederate (and neo-conservative) whose main arguments were attempting to justify racism against non-whites and arguing that the South was on the right side of history during the Civil War.

Dude, learn your history.  Neocons were supporters of the civil rights movement, and were even considered liberals early on because of that.

I knew that most neo-conservatives strongly supported the civil rights movement. Even though he had views on race similar to many active on the neo-confederate movement, StatesRights held foreign policy views that are similar to most neo-conservatives. Basically, his views were a combination of several different ideologies that weren't that similar.

Take Charlton Heston for example, haha.

It's typical of Americans to confuse communism with socialism, it seems.

Yes, I think Henry Wallace fell into this category.

I agree. Henry Wallace seemed to be more of a democratic socialist more than anything. Actually, Wallace's views on many domestic policy issues were considered ahead of their time for the 1940s, but by the 1960s, they were pretty much in the mainstream.

Curious, why would you vote for Wallace, the pro-union, welfare expanding, racist Democrat?

Which one? Henry was racist because he intentionally tried to tie civil rights to communism and discredit them. In many ways he was a true leftist who showed signs of not only being a Soviet stooge but also a Klansman stooge.

George.  Granted he was a racist, but at least he wasn't a Communist.

Henry wasn't a communist... so you just voted for a segregationist

What a nauseating choice.

On impulse, I selected George Wallace.  George Wallace was an expedient politician who may well have become the black man's best friend if he had been elected President.  It sounds silly, but Lester Maddox appointed more blacks to positions in state government then any Georgia Governor before him, and George Wallace was less of a true believer than Maddox.  George wasn't about "the Southern way of life"; that was Strom Thurmond's schtick.  George Wallace was about moving up the political ladder, and the Presidency was one more step.

Henry Wallace, on the other hand, scares me.  How much of a "fellow traveler" he was, we'll never know.  George Wallace may have been a racist, but he was also an expedient politician who would respond to the popular will, and the national popular will is different than the popular will of the Deep South alone.  That's a safeguard that didn't apply to Henry Wallace.

A lot of what Strom did too was for political expedience.

Henry later supported Nixon and Eisenhower, so he wasn't that much of a communist. Him being a closet racist still stands though.

How on Earth was George Wallace a right winger, other than your manufactured assertion that being racist falls somewhere on a political spectrum?  You're the one who's coming across as brain dead.

It's difficult to attribute much of an ideology to George Wallace because he literally spent his entire career scheming to get to a higher office or position of power. He spent little time in Alabama actually governing.
