What comes to mind when you picture a democrat or a republican? What do they look like in your mind, how do they dress, what is their job, what does their house look like? What is your stereotype of each party's  average voter?

I picture two white men in Pennsylvania- an old man Democrat and a younger, middle-aged Republican man... I think from doing the voting booths on Election Day in Pennsylvania.  The Democrat is on Social Security and Medicare, is retired, lives in a small house with his wife, has lots of grandkids, and tells stories of the old days of Bethlehem Steel and the Lackawanna coal mines.  The Republican is a very well-dressed man who is in a white collar job and is concerned with property taxes.  Both are non-radical, well-informed, and very polite.

these were the most likely kinds of voters to show up at the polls ten years ago at a small, swingy college town in eastern Pennsylvania

Obviously the "stereotype" isn't going to be anywhere close to the actual average voter, but:

Republican:

Democrat:

It's changed over the years. I remember in 5th grade we had a sort of joke assignment to draw a picture of a Kerry voter and a Bush voter to help us understand the characatures that we hear in politics and to recognize them as such. This is more or less what I drew:

Democrats

Republicans

Nowadays, however, I think it's more along the lines of:

Democrats

Republicans

Democrats

So, I think of business people are republicans and social/political activists as democrats.

Considering your own views, I assume that this Republican portrayal was supposed to be negative, but it's really not...
