Is it possible for the caucus-goers in Iowa to vote for "uncommitted/undecided" (so that these votes are counted)? This question refers to either party's caucus.

I'm asking this question because in 2012, there were 147 "uncommitted" votes on the Republican side; in 2016, on the other hand, no one chose that option. I don't know if that was because no one wanted to opt for "uncommitted", or if it was not allowed anymore.

In practice, unpledged support at the precinct level has typically represented the coalition of minor candidate supporters, rather than people who showed up without any idea of whom to support.  (Officially, I was an unpledged delegate from my precinct caucus to the county conventional back in 1988 for exactly those reasons, chosen in part as a way to grow youth participation in the party, or perhaps because the others knew what a mess the county convention would be. That mess is in large part why ever since then I've limited my political participation to just voting.) Whether it's still an option given the desire of both major parties to come to a decision well before the national convention, I don't know.
