How long can the New Deal Coalition, and the Democrats' mid-century dominance, be stretched out in an alternate history? What circumstances would it take to keep it going? Basically, make the Democrats a big tent for as long as possible while still in a two party system. Go crazy.

Economically, you somehow have to stop the government's overconfidence in the dollar being able to handle both the Great Society and Vietnam so prosperity continues. Easy enough if you can prevent Vietnam, but then you also have to maintain America's manufacturing hegemony by weakening Europe and Japan. The biggest challenge is keeping the civil rights movement from breaking the base.

What shape would the Republicans take in a prolonged rut, clinging to life in the rural midwest? Note that they can still pull the occasional win (see Eisenhower, apolitical), but it's rare. Would the Eastern Establishment win in its push to be New Deal-lite, or would anti-communist conservatives push the party toward objectivism? Would business interests in the growing Sun Belt eventually demand deregulation and flip to the Republicans? Could the Democrats keep up their "tough guy" image when accused of being "soft on communism"? The New Dealers have to fall eventually, and the guys who pick up the pieces will be the ones reshaping America.

Snaps half the nation, and it just happens to be the opposition.
