Philadelphia is the only reasonable option. Its historic, cultural, and political importance should put it first in line to become the capital of the United States.

Kansas City, for no other reason that it’s the exact center of the country.

We, the 42% west of the Mississippi, will not stand for this East Coast Imperialism!

If it stays on the East Coast, then definitely Philadelphia.

Otherwise I would say St. Louis (my first choice) or Kansas City. Being in the center of the country is useful for the purposes of traveling and defense, but I also like that they're a sort of culture middle ground. Also, I wouldn't want the nation's capital to be dominated by the culture of a big city like Chicago.

Only a blue avatar would come up with that idiotic scenario in the first post.
Having said that, the capital should ideally be as close to the mean center of the population as possible (that's how Washington, D.C. was chosen).  I would also place it in a city that at least has an international airport.  Currently the mean center is somewhere in Missouri but has been moving West, and will most likely continue doing so.
I would put the capital in Kansas City, since it's further west than St. Louis.  Also, it's on the border between two states, which makes it possible for the city to become a federal district.

Why not? I think it needs to be in a metro area with AT LEAST 5 million people.

I like the idea of dividing between multiple cities for each branch.

Sounds terribly inefficient. Plus I like centralization.
