Well tbf, there's a difference between 1 min. cameos that can honestly be filmed on weekends &/or during recesses & having a starring role in a television series that produces 24 hours of film a season, which is literally the equivalent of making 12 full movies.

(I suppose it did work for Fred Thompson re: Law & Order while he was still a Senator during the final months of his Senate term in 2002, but he also wasn't running for re-election at the time &, even then as a lame duck, only filmed during the August & October congressional recesses of that year b/c his commitment to the Senate was foremost 'til his term was over.)
