Well, I just finished pulling an all-nighter to write a philosophy paper and I have a lot of energy and felt inspired to make this thread. I thought it might be fun if some of us shared some good quotes. These can be philosophical/religious/whatever. Funny, serious, really anything related to this board. I'll start off with a couple of silly philosopher quotes that I like.

“How can anyone suppose that laws are a serious matter or believe in them, since it often happens that the very people who make them repeal them and substitute and pass others in their place?”

-Hippias inspiring edgy teenagers of the future.

“The delightful way the various parts of a human body differ in temperature”

-Ludwig Wittgenstein being a little creepy.

“…egg whites are bird’s milk”
-Anaxagoras of Clazomenae making a scientific observation.

I did this in my own spare time:

"Those who are most willing to speak truth to power
Will never before another be a bower,
And, for the sake of Liberty, will not cower.
All those who are willing to live on their own knee
Rather than choose to die on their own two, steady feet
Have chosen then to give up their own Liberty
For security and dissidents to be beat."

Another one:
"The best rhymes and poems involve words the author made up in their interios cranius."

Came across this quote attributed to Pericles by Thucydides in the previous class I TAed for:

"We do not say that a man who takes no interest in politics is a man who minds his own business; we say that he has no business here at all."

Basically, if you don't like politics, GO BACK TO SPARTA YOU UN-ATHENIAN SCUM!!! Freedom city. Smiley

Fascinating. It seems both great cities have something to offer the modern world.

I sometimes like to quote Shakespeare....

"And this above all, to thine own self be true; and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man"

Guy Debord: "Quotations are useful in periods of ignorance or obscurantist beliefs."
