The button has gone missing for me since this morning.

It was removed and everything else was consolidated into one line.

I like it. More people should use it instead of just emptyquoting posts.

I'm not a fan. It's a feature that helps make the internet more like a school lunchroom. It may cut down on empty quoting, but I suspect it will lead to more performative affirmation-seeking. I also think liking or recommending a comment is a very underhanded argumentative tactic. Not having something like this was something I liked about the forum.

Disagree. On an anonymous platform where there is no count of how many likes each person is receiving, and where pages are short enough that most posts are going to get buried anyway, I don't think there will be any incentive for performative affirmation-seeking that doesn't already exist.

We literally have threads dedicated to "high quality posts", "atlas hilarity", and a "burn center". We also have a shocking number of posters who have literally hundreds of emptyquote posts that add almost literally nothing to the forum. I think the upside is bigger than the downside.

I think it's a good feature and, like everything Virginia touches, makes this site a better place.

A "top posts of the week" list feature, or something like that, would also be fun. It could also be a good way of archiving favorite posts, which the site has never had before.

If this were to ever happen, I am going to have to start reccing all the trollposts I see on the forum until enough people get tired of it and the feature ends up having to be removed from the forum entirely.

I think it's a decent idea, but the name "recommend" doesn't make much sense. Maybe change it to "like" or "upvote"?

"Recommend" seems unnecessarily clunky. Why this over "Like"?

The reason it is not named Like is because of this:

Hi -
My thought on this is rather than "like", change the terminology to be "agree".  This would be the method to replace an empty quote.  I still prefer to have posts that reply with more substantive information.  I'm interested in hearing more thoughts on how you think this will influence discussion.

I'll research this a bit more to see what options there are.  I am currently already looking into upgrading the forum to 2.0 -> that will be a big job to bring over all the customizations.

Thanks,
Dave

In fact, a friend had told me that a better way would be to have multiple types of "reactions," such as "Helpful," "Agree," etc. I wanted to do that but it would have required fairly substantial modifications that would have killed compatibility with SMF 2.1 (the upcoming newest version), which we need to upgrade to sometime before the 2020 election or primaries.

My opinion is that if when Atlas Forum upgrades to that, and if we're still using the recommendation system, and if I still have the time then, I'll add more reactions. Although I still have to say I'm against any kind of negative reaction feature, outside of maybe a "controversial" label or something.

Kiwi Forums has something similar.  I haven't posted there in years, but they had all sorts of reactions including "Like," "Informative," "Winner," "Feels," "Horrifying," "Semper Fidelis," etc.  Unfortunately their forum software is by XenForo and not YaBB. :/

I think "endorse" would also work nicely.
