Not many details yet. Would throw State Senate into 33-33 tie if she has to resign.

Of course the legislative session ends next month. Walz could call a special election and have it filled by summer. Walz won it with about 60% last year so it's close to safe DFL.

What a bizarre story though. She was arrested in Detroit Lakes in the far northwest part of the state and she's from Woodbury, a southeastern suburb...makes you wonder what she was up to. Also she's a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force Reserve so there could be some serious consequences there.

EDIT: I looked into this a bit deeper and it looks like this was her father's obituary: https://www.daviddonehower.com/obituaries/roderick-rod-mitchell

He lived in Detroit Lakes and there's some speculation the house she broke into her was her stepmother's and claims they didn't get along....also he died a little over a year ago, so complete speculation is that she was trying to get something of his that she wanted but her stepmother refused to let go.

Easiest move would just to have a special coincide with the regular primary and general election since the legislature will not be in session anyway.

I have to think there is more involved here than we know. Did she know the person who owned the house? A bad breakup of a domestic relationship? There has to be something more to it than a state senator breaking into a house several counties away to steal stuff.

See above. It looks like the house she broke into was her stepmother's.

Also...compare mug shot to official Senate portrait. I know that no one looks good in a mug shot but wow I would've not have thought that was the same woman! Also the mug shot looks weird, why is she glancing like that?

That would not make it right but it would make it make sense.

First-degree burglary by the way is a pretty serious crime, the max penalty is 20 years (extremely unlikely of course she'd receive anywhere near that), and under Minnesota law is defined as the person entering the dwelling unauthorized either possessing a weapon or assaulting someone inside.

As a National Guard reservist it wouldn't be surprising if she was carrying a gun, but still...that's definitely a career ender, especially as it's a felony meaning she would no longer be able to carry a firearm.

Doesn't exactly square with the facts though such as that she entered through a window, she was carrying a flashlight covered in a black sock, etc

Maybe she didn't want to be detected by the relative and startle them out of fear of this exact situation happening?

I just realized... I think this is the same Nicole Mitchell who was on The Weather Channel for a while.

Edit: Yes, it is.

I mean, she could've called the police - during the daylight hours - and requested a wellness check. Truly bizarre story and one I have a really hard time buying, but I don't know all the facts.

If this Alzheimer's story ends up being true then I don't think she'll be in any trouble.

yeah, though I think BRTD's assessment might be the more likely one just because the facts make more sense there.

This woman is a nut who got elected to public office.

At a minimum, she has no boundaries.  Her stepmother was her father's husband, and his closest relative under the law.  A lawmaker ought to know that.  Those ashes belonged to her stepmother, and if her father did not explicitly lay out different wishes in a Will, it's Too Bad On Her Birthday.

I realize the importance many people place on this, but there is a "So What?" aspect to this.  Yes, it would be nice if her stepmother (who may be more of a Father's 2nd Wife than a "Stepmom" who helped raise her as a kid) was able to just work things out, but we only have Nicole Mitchell's side of it.  There are lots of family members that 2nd spouses actively work to turn a parent's affection away from, but there are also lots of kids who are never accepting and supportive of their parent's remarriage, going to the point of making it known their view of them as a Golddigger or a Homewrecker (if the remarriage is after an adulterous episode).  Nicole Mitchell isn't coming forward with the why they didn't get along.  And it isn't really any of our business, but it isn't an excuse for stealing ashes that belonged to her stepmother.

I'm not saying "Throw the book at her!".  If I were the stepmother, I'd seek to drop the charges, and simply get some kind of restraining order (if she's as loony as these events suggest she might be).

This is nobody's business. We have no idea whether the stepmother is reasonable or not and no one should care about this story. Hopefully she doesn't resign.

This is no surprise as the legislature isn't in session anymore, so the tied Senate while her seat is vacant won't have an impact now.

I believe if she resigns by June 6th they will be able to have the special primary and general at the same times as the regular elections.
