Quote
Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont has called up the state's National Guard to deal with an impending strike among long-term care facility and nursing home workers — a move that was blasted by union leaders despite the administration's insistence that the force would only be used to move at-risk residents in case of emergency.

"I authorize you to immediately call up a sufficient force of members of the armed forces of the state to support as needed the Department of Public Health in protecting the public health and safety in response to any potential work stoppage or strike of workers at long-term care facilities or other congregate settings in the state beginning on or about May 14, 2021," Lamont, a Democrat, wrote Monday to Major General Francis Evon, Jr., the state's adjutant general.
Nurses striking are an apparent security concern to the people of Connecticut apparently now.

Governor Lamont clearly is the second worst Democratic Governor as of this writing, worse than even Raimondo and I*e and could even go down worse than Blago the way it’s going.

SEIU is scum, as I have said many times before. At a time when governments are struggling for revenue required to serve residents, they're trying to pocket taxpayer money that doesn't exist.

Opinion discarded. Unnecessary to point out now how disproportionate a use of force bringing in the national guard is to intimidate nurses now.

lol... he's calling up 50 members of the National Guard to augment public health staff. There are staff at 33 nursing homes going on strike, so I'm not sure how 1.5 unarmed National Guardsmen working inside the nursing home is supposed to be "intimidation".

There is no good reason to deploy National Guardsmen unless the state government is trying to send a message of intimidation for everyone to keep on working.

The National Guard provides a pool of reliable staff that can be called on to serve the state government on short notice. Using them to augment public health staff is hardly even novel, especially given the public health situation right now...

How is the national guard being used to intimidate nurses ? They're working the jobs temporariliy which is something they had to do unless you want to end up with a bunch of dead elderly and disabled people(which would probably set the american labour movement back another decade or so). You'd prefer they hire scabs ?

They do plan to hire scabs, but the National Guard will help public health staff with running the show on the ground and make sure there is accountability to government.

So from what I understand he's not using the National Guard to crush the strike but rather work at the nursing homes in the interim to provide needed care to the residents. What's wrong with that? Should he just let someone in one with a medical emergency die?.

I presume you oppose deploying medics on a battlefield, too?

Some people just need to "both sides" everything no matter how much it contradicts the facts.

Of course Lamont isn’t using the National Guard to intimidate workers. The military provide an easily accessed source of labour, that are often looked to in a situation like this. It’s not always pretty, but it at least makes logical sense

In the Winter of Discontent of 1978, UK PM Jim Callaghan drew up plans to use the military in place of striking workers, from grave diggers to lorry drivers. He only relented because to do so would require authorising a National Emergency declaration, which was seen as an escalation. That’s the only example that comes to mind, but the military usually comes in to fill the gaps in moments like this.
