OK, here's the rub. Bentsen wins the Democratic nomination in 1988 and NARROWLY wins against Bush. Original poll here:

http://www.uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?board=15;action=display;threadid=5461

Four years later and Lloyd Bentsen steps up for re-election. His challenger? Dan Quayle, not carrying the stigma of potatoe-head after an ill-fated spell as Bush's Vice President (since Bush lost in this scenario) and one of the most prominent Republicans in the country.

Who would you vote for? Who wins?

I'd vote for Quayle, no doubt. Bentsen would probably win though.

Oh dear... I forgot all about him...  Embarrassed

But it's a good question. Would Perot have figured in a Bentsen-Quayle race?

Bentsen would win, but things would not be great, his economic polices would not be that much different to Bush's but it would be close i doubt Perot would enter the race because Bentsen as a southern Dem might well be keen to balance the budget, added to all this Quayle is a boring speaker and a poor candidate, so something like this...

Bentsen/ Gore :  343

Quayle/ Kemp : 195

Perot would not enter, he entered primarily out of a hatred for Bush Sr.

A lot would depend on how Bentsen did as President.  I think that he would have tried to roll back the Reagan revolution, lost Congress, and be facing the same economic problems Bush did, only worse with his higher taxes having restrained growth.

Bentsen.  Remember the Kennedy line in the '88 VP debate?  I felt soooo bad for Danny Quayle then...

That is the reason why I can't stand Bentsen. It was...hmmm...really uncalled for.

Qualye would get maybe 33% if Perot was in. Bentsen would win in a landslide.

How was it uncalled for?  It was nothing compared to all the mudslinging that had gone on in previous months.

How was it uncalled for? Are you kidding? Quayle simply said he had as much experience as JFK did before he was elected President and Bentsen goes into this "You're no Jack Kennedy" stuff. It was unnecessary. Quayle handled it very well though with the "That was really uncalled for Senator" response.

It was a total negative for Bentsen, made him look mean.
