U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg has a seven-point lead over former Republican U.S. Rep. Dick Zimmer, 48%-41%, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released this morning.

More than half of New Jersey’s registered voters – 55% -- say the 84-year-old Lautenberg is too old to effectively serve another six years in the United States Senate.  39% say he is not too old.

So at least 7% of people think Lautenberg is too old be an effective senator, but still plan to vote for him?  About right

The frustrating thing about New Jersey politics is that it has a solid, sensible portion of the electorate who can swing away from ineffective and corrupt politicians, but that portion of the electorate is seldom able to trump the 50% of New Jersey voters who will vote for a Democrat no matter what.

Yeah, you have the solid 40% Republican voters, solid 45% Democratic voters, 4% sane independents and 6% people who just love corruption

South Carolina, 1996. I'd say the numbers were even higher there.

The best question is whether Frank Lautenberg thinks Frank Lautenberg is too old to be a senator:
