Utah, Kansas and Colorado state legislatures have voted to drop their presidential primaries next year, citing the fact that it costs the states millions of dollars, but the nominee is anointed by the media and powerful elites after the first few early primaries. The later states have no reason to waste all that money. The message resonates well including with Democrats - New Mexico is dropping its primary and Washington Governor Gary Locke who is president of the Democratic Governor's association says why waste $7 million on a foregone conclusion? With Republicans it is even easier b/c they knew GW will be re-nominated. The primary will only serve as a platform for unhelpful criticism from within the party.

In other news, 4 Democratic candidates have pulled out of the Wash. D.C. primary, the earliest one, which was supposed to draw attention to D.C.'s complaint that its residents do not have Congressional representation. D.C's flag and the defection of a Gore elector in 2000 also unsuccessfully tried to draw attention to the issue.

The primary system is in bad shape.

I wish they had primaries in 2 or 3 small states clustered together, or one big state every other week.  For example, after Iowa and New Hampshire they could have South Carolina and Georgia.  After that Missouri and Kansas, then Michigan alone, then west-Arizona and New Mexico together, etc...
I agree, the system is in bad shape.

Why not just have a national primary day, where every state votes?

Because that's just too easy.

I think that makes sense.  But it would be fought by the states tooth and nail esp IA and NH.  Plus it would take away fromt eh conventions tremendously.

Isn't it NH law that it's primary has to be at least a week before any other state?
Sounds daft enough to be true...

Yes I believe that is right.  I do know it is in their state laws, regulating the primary.

I think we should keep the primaries. It makes the months leading up to the conventions very interesting.

IT isn't fair that the people of Iowa and NH have more power in selecting the president of the US than the other states combined in the primaries.
