http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/06/29/poll.veep/index.html

A few points I thought were 'cool':

-A Kerry-Edwards ticket either satisfied or made 80 percent of the Democrats enthusiastic, along with 62 percent of Republicans. Only Bayh approached that last number, with 57 percent of the GOP voters saying they would be satisfied with his candidacy with Kerry.

-Edwards scored lowest in the "dissatisfied" categories -- 14 percent of Democrats said they'd be dissatisfied if Kerry chose him, along with 26 percent of Republicans.

All this poll shows if that Kerry were to pick one of the people who ran against him for the Democratic nomination to be his running mate, Edwards would be the best pick he could make to help him get elected.  I don't really think that this is news to any of the political junkies here.  The real question, and one that can't be answered by one of these media polls, is, "Is there a potential running mate who isn't well known nationally, but could help Kerry win more battleground electoral votes than Edwards?"  The fact that Edwards would help raise more votes in California, South Carolina, and Massachisetts than any other choice doesn't matter because those aren't battleground states.  If the presiceny was elected by the national popular vote, then Edwards should clearly win the veepstakes, but if that were the case, Gore would be running for reelection this year.  Rendell is personal favorite because I think he can make Pennsylvania a Democratic lock, but Florida and Ohio are important sattes also, but I can't think of anyone who would help as much there as Rendell would in Pennsylvania.  Rendell would be even better if he came from Pittsburg instead of Philadelphia.  Is there a prominent Democrat from West Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, or northern West Virginia who would make a good runnning mate.  Geographically, that would be the best place for a Kerry running mate to come from this year as he could conceivably help with all three battleground states.

One would think that Gephardt could help in the Rust Belt states. That was before he tanked in IOWA- a Rust Belt state.

Agreed. Cheesy
Dole/Dole was a distant possibility, but Kerry/Heinz-Kerry is not and Clinton/Clinton never was.

If Cheney drops out, we could have Jeb for a Bush/Bush ticket.  Grin

Not technically, in that sense you are correct. However it was still a very union-oriented state which much in common with rust-belt states.

Yeah, why not pick Conrad? I mean right after he announces Conrad as his VP pick, he can concede. Grin
