The "If Clinton ran in 88"-thread got me thinking. Assuming Lloyd Bentsen got the Democratic nomination in 1988, who do you think would have won between Bentsen and Bush?

Also, who do you think Bentsen would've chosen as his running mate?

It would have made Texas very interesting!!!!
I think it would have been close.
What about Clinton for VP, or Dale Bumpers?

I would DEFINETLEY want BUSH and he would win (I really dislike Llyod Bentsen). The race would have been closer but Bush would still be victorious in the end. Concerning Bentsen's VP pick, maybe he would select Gephardt for help in the midwest.

I still think Bensten and Hart would have won, Dukakis was a terrible campaigner, Bensten/Hart would have done way better. Plus, Bensten could actually win debates against Bush and Hart would have triumphed over Quayle

Bensten/Hart 296 EVs
Bush/Quayle 242 EVs

It would have been a different world. 2000 Bush wouldn't get the GOP nomination because George W. Bush wouldn't that well known without a former President's backing. McCain would have swept the nomination then. There might not have been a 2000 Republican Competition for the nomination. Clinton might have never been president. Who knows?

Bentsen in a heart beat, he and John Glenn and perhaps Hugh Carey and Mario Cumo where the outstanding Democrats of their generation Smiley

Bentsen would probably pick Gore or Gephardt to be his running mate and i think the election would be really close...

Bentsen/ Gephardt (DEM) : 292

Bush/ Quayle (REP) : 246

...that said TX, LA, AR, IL, NJ and PA would have all been close between Bentsen and Bush, that said in the end i think that perhaps the Reagan effect could have thrown the election to Bush by the slimmest of margins, but it really really would be close Smiley

I think it may have looked something like this...

Lloyd Bentsen/Richard Gephardt (D) 274
George H. W. Bush/Dan Quayle (R) 261

But I agree, it would have been VERY close and a lot of states could have gone either way.

Bentsen would have won some southern states, Bush (41) did not have the southern appeal that his son does and Bentsen was a quintessentially southern breed of Democrat.

You've got a point there, I didn't really think about it that way... I guess I'm too used to the idea of the South being a Republican stronghold...

I wonder how a Bentsen victory in '88 would affect the '92 race. Dan Quayle might win the Republican nomination, since he was still regarded as a political heavyweight before being Bush's running mate, and would not have carried the stigma of being, well, thick, had he not had his spell in office. And how would a Bentsen v Quayle race pan out? I can sense another poll approaching... Wink
