I received this e-mail today from the Liberty Committee, a group of congressmen who believe the constitution still means something.

“The American tradition of parents deciding what is best for their children is, yet again, under attack.  The pharmaceutical industry has convinced President Bush to support mandatory mental-health screening for every child in America, including preschool children, and the industry is now working to convince Congress as well.  But mandatory screening alone is not what the pharmaceutical industry wants.  The real payoff for the drug companies is the forced drugging of children that will result -- as we learned tragically with Ritalin -- even when parents refuse.”

You can read the full text of the letter at:
http://www.thelibertycommittee.org/update09.07.04.htm

What do you think of this? Should we allow government to do this or not?

This is why I think we need mandatory mental health screening for anyone who runs for office.

For anything else, no

Ritalin and other mind control drugs need to be banished from America's schools lickety-split.

Unfortunately there does exist a whole newsgroup made up of whiny soccer parents dedicated to harassing anyone who supports my view on this.

I oppose mandatory screening, it is too big brotherish for my tastes. Parents need to take responsibility for this, not government.

Ritalin works.  It would work on anybody, even those without any problem.  Illegal sales of ritalin are a growing problem on college campuses.

That is the problem.  You give it to a kid, and his grades go up.  So some people think that supports the diagnosis of ADD or whatever.  Problem is any person who took the drug would see similar benefits.

I do not believe its right to "drug" a child because of some supposed mental condition. Unless they have a disease or something that would really affect them drugs like that do not belong in a childs body. I believe the diagnosis of ADD has been overblown and is given to to many children who just haven't found a creative use for all their energy.

Ritalin is a stimulant, but for some reason, it has opposite effects on those with ADD.

This both reeks of Big Brother and of socialized medicine, bad socialized medicine at that - I have my qualms with socialized medicine for a variety of reasons, but this just begs to be subject to malpractice, corruption, and so many other problems. WRITE YOUR CONGRESSMAN! The fact that liberals, conservatives, libertarians, socialists, ect. all seem to be agreeing that this is fundamentally wrong should tell you something - this must be stopped.

I have ADD, and I agree that the diagnosis of it is out of control. Most kids just need a good ass kicking.

Looks like everyone so far is opposed. You can send
e-mail to your representative by clicking on the link
http://capwiz.com/liberty/issues/alert/?alertid=6333001&type=CO

Then enter your zipcode to find your rep. There is a pre-written letter you can send too.

Already sent my letter to my congressman.  Doubt it will do much good with him though.

Ritalin is a stimulant, but for some reason, it has opposite effects on those with ADD.

Ritalin works mainly on one portion of the brain.  (I forget which.)  When this area is stimulated it increases the ability to focus on a task and increases memory retention.

Kids with ADD have difficulty focusing on one task.  This is why Ritalin helps them.

Part of my techer training included reading a primer on the common learning disabilities and their treatments.

It also stiffles their creative abilites. Many children can be taught to funnel all this "energy" into something creative, such as art or sports. These drugs are turning our children into zombies.

Old related story:

1989, Target got into a lawsuit in California for psychological testing.  They required a psychological test for their security guards with about 120 questions and then judge the scores based on how far off they were off the average of everyone else, with outliers showing up.

Some of the questions were a bit weird though:
8. I liked Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol
47. Women should not be allowed to drink in cocktail bars
62. I think Lincoln was greater than Washington
67. I feel su re there is only one true religion
68. I am embarassed by dirty stories
137. I wish I were not bothered by thoughts about sex
313. I hardly ever feel pain in the back of my neck
368. I have no difficulty starting or holding my urine
466. My sex life is satisfactory
492. I am very strongly attracted by members of my own sex
496. I often wished I were a girl (or if you are a girl) I've never been sorry that I'm a girl
505. I go to church almost every wek
506. I believe in the second coming of Christ
525. I've never indulged in unusual sex practices
etc.

I know three people on Ritalin or similar drugs (all are in their 20's).  They're all very different people when on the drug.  I don't even want to be around them when they take it.  Someone used the term zombie alreday in this thread and that's a perfect description of how they are on the drug.

Personally I don't know about the effectiveness of the drugs for treating real mental illness. But I do know that I don't want a bunch of goofball bureaucrats running mental health tests on my kids or grandkids without our consent. And I don't want them put on drugs without our consent either.

I swear, this is why people need to start voting Libertarian. Not a single person here thinks this is a good idea - NOT ONE. Heck, 4/5ths think this is a HORRIBLE idea. Do you want to continue having government in your business like this? This isn't going to change if you continue voting Repubilican or Democrat.

On second thoughts, those who introduced this legislation should have gotten mandatory mental screenings.

And I'm surprised no one voted yes. There are more totalitarians than you think on this forum, such as the one who said "I don't see how the Patriot act violates the Constitution in any way."

Because the patriot act doesn't violate the Constitution in anyway. You know, unlike 99.9% of the other things government does.

The constitution never said about the right to property, so we can be a completely socialistic nation. No?
