They just aren't a large enough part of our population to be considered at this point...no earlier than 2100.

I agree with Foamy the Weasal, I don't even think we can list it as a possibly for a long time, I think there may even be a possibility that it never happens because of a long, drawn out war with the Islamic Radicals. Which is sad, because in this case, I think prejudice will prevail over some good Muslim candidates.

We have a president of Muslim descent, I think that may be as close as we will ever get.

Agree - although I don't think it'll ever happen.

You could be right....though it does depend on how long our Constitution is the law of the land. Does a Muslim President have 100 years to elected or 5000 years to get elected?

I think that if the Muslim population grows (Not like the conspiracy theories) there's a chance, but first we'd have to drop what seems like the last "Mainstream" religion-based prejudice.

One day, certainly. But it's probably not going to happen in this century.

As long as millions of people think Muslim = terrorist, it's not going to happen.

Yeah, me. Tongue

Really, though, "ever" is a strong word, but given the reaction to Ellison's election to the House, I can't see it happening. The population isn't there, either. Remember that we've only had one Catholic President, despite anti-Catholicism being virtually nonexistent today.

At this point in time, an open Muslim can not. I can't say in the future however.

There are actually two Muslim Congressmen: Keith Ellison (D-Minnesota) and Andre Carson (D-Indiana). Both are African Americans who converted to Islam.

Before anyone goes off on a "OMG MUZLIMS ARE IN CONGRESS!!! CHRISTIAN AMERICA IS DOOMED!!! MUSLIMZ = TERRURISTZ" tangent, please note that Muslims are about 1-2% of the U.S. population, so if the congresss were perfectly reflective of the U.S. population, there would be between 4 and 9 Muslim Congressmen. Also, Ellison was the first Muslim congressman.

I wouldn't call a closeted Muslim a Muslim, but that's just me.

Remember during a McCain meeting :

A woman in the public : I've heard Obama is a Muslim, that scares me a lot.
McCain : No, he's not a Muslim. He is a good person.

That's not the exact words, since it's a traduction of what I remember having heard in french, but the sense was that.

I've just found it on youtube. The woman said he's "an Arab" and McCain took the mic off her and said "he's a decent, family man, citizen that I just have to have disagreements with on fundamental issues." Although, you've gotta give McCain kudos for trying to quash all the Muslim/Arab/Kenya rumours.

I do. Indeed, I consider this mostly a pavlovian lapsus than real racism. The problem is that too many people would reac as McCain did ( if not worse ).

I don't think McCain meant, "He isn't an Arab, he's a good person," as in "Arabs aren't good people."
