Why? He would have won handily. This would have set him up perfectly for 2012, or for 2016. Why'd he do it? He's been an excellent governor so far.

Because bad things are coming. Governor's are in charge, they get blamed, they must act. Senators just vote. It's a choice anyone with higher ambitions would make.

For his inevitable presidential run (barring his inevitable outing as a gay before this happens), it looks better to the voters that he's been a governor AND a senator. It silences the "experience" critics.

His wife is actually kind of hot too, so it's a shame, a real waste. Hopefully she's getting some from many guys on the side as well.

Since Sink didn't run, it gave the republican a retention opportunity and Crist was the logical choice to succeed Mel martinez.

Governors are going to take big hits for the next couple of years. And Crist want to stay popular just in case he does run for President in 2012.

Did you think Mark Foley was gay? Larry Craig? A Jewish Conservative?

Admittedly, no, and that last one came as a real surprise. Anyway, I just don't think he is. Call it a gut feeling. But if he were, I'd still think he'd make a good president.

In politics, it'll always be a surprise.

I believe the state is pretty Republican at the state level, so Crist was the best choice to hold Martinez's seat because the Republicans can probably retain the Governor's mansion anyway.

I doubt Crist will run in 2012. If elected (yes, he's shoo-in) he'd up for-reelection in 2016. Maybe too much gambling?

If Crist ran for re-election instead of running for the US Senate. Democrats would have won the OPEN US Senate Seat- Martinez is vacating.
Ron Klien, Kathy Castor, or Debbie Wasserman Schultz would have entered the US Senate Race. With the exception of Jeb Bush,Ilena Ros Lehtenin and maybe Connie Mack Jr. The Republican candidates would not stand a chance of getting elected to the US Senate.
2010 was a best time for Crist to get elected to the US Senate. It is an open seat election. Bill Nelson's seat does not come up until 2012- Unseating Nelson in 2012 or the new Democratic US Senate from FL in 2016 will be difficult, Crist is no longer going to have a high job approval rating. The last Florida Governor to get elected US Senate- Bob Graham- unseated Republican Incumbent Paula Hawkins who was part of the 1980 Reagan Revolution.

Yeah, Republicans would never exploit homophobia for political gain.  Oh, wait...

Such as?  To FL, specifically I mean.  This move is dumb, IMO.  Governors are Kings of their state and he's King of a huge one.   So what bad FL stuff?

But as someone noted, maybe he's got more to choose from in DC to fulfill his desires. Wink
