Global Treaty Organization Expansion Bill

1. The Senate hereby approves the expansion of the Global Treaty Organization treaty entered into on July 17, 2006 with the Governments of Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Germany, India, Japan, South Africa, and the United Kingdom to include the Governments of Argentina, Canada, France, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain and Sweden.

2. The President and other officers of the Atlasian Government shall take such actions, and enforce such regulations, as may be necessary to implement the provisions of the treaty with these new member countries.

This looks mighty fine to me, I'd love to see better relations with Mexico and Argentina especially. Hopefully this will pass with ease.

Supported but I'd also support the inclusion of South Korea and Norway, since you'd like to include Sweden.

I will accept an amendment to include the RoK and Norway as friendly.

Just as a note; the GM should inform us of the ratification process of this treaty in each of the concerned countries knowing their governments, legislatures and so forth.

Already brainstorming it. I've got it covered. Wink

I am happy with this bill. though like others will probably offer amendments at this stage to expand the community.

I propose an amendment to include the Republic of Chile as a stable, democratic and financially prosperous nation.

The DOEA supports this measure and would also like to see the inclusion of Ireland if at all possible, Denmark and Greece too.

Actually, assuming this is accurate, the original bill was passed on the 27th, not the 17th. Wink

Anyways, I agree with ben on Israel, and I also think Iceland deserves a slot in there. Smiley

Couldn't we just include the EU? Arguing over including all these smaller European nations is kind of ridiculous. If we have Sweden, we should have Denmark, and if Denmark is in, why isn't the Netherlands, and if the Netherlands is in, why isn't Belgium, and it goes on forever.

The GTO should include countries of major relevance on the world stage, and countries that are close partners of Atlasian.

People can stop nominating their favourite foreign country.

I thought the point of a Global Treaty Organization was to make the strongest alliance possible which would entail having as many allies as possible right?

There is actually a growing buzz around "minilateralism" in the international relations field, in which agreement of the fewest necessary number of nations is sought to achieve the desired result.

Not, of course, to rule out multilateralism. I just read an interesting piece a few weeks back about that emerging field. Both are needed and beneficial in their own ways, so whatever the Senate chooses will have its pros and cons.

But why is Sweden more important than the Netherlands? Or New Zealand more important than Chile? I just don't know how you can draw the line here without being arbitrary.

Bear in mind that 4/5 of GTO member nations must approve of all nations petitioning for admittance.

I never said it didn't. Did I name specifics? No.

Then why not include the whole damn world in it while we're at it?

Listen, I remain very open to including the EU, Israel, and other countries, but I'm less open to people wanting to include their favourite little country.
