I don't know. Chuck Hagel made that a hard argument to sell in recent years.

Not really. Despite his stance in foreign affairs, Hagel was, regarding domestic affairs, more conservative than Nelson

Hagel might have been more conservative than Nelson, but he had some things that Nelson sorely lacks: conviction, spine and a willingness to support things that he knew were going to harm him politically (see criticism of Iraq War and support for Obama).

This is like comparing Dick Lugar and Evan Bayh. I doubt that even the Democrats will ever say that Bayh is a better senator.

My opinion of the man is neutral, but I voted HP just cause I like Hagel way more than Nelson. Tongue

HP overall.  Seems to be a very nice man and he's not without merit as an elected official.  But given my druthers, I'll take a leftist Democrat over a barely Democrat almost any day.

Yes. He seems to be a pretty nice guy when he is interviewed, but I do wonder why he is a Democrat.

Horrible trash. He's a far right-winger. Being a "Democrat" from Nebraska is no excuse. Bob Kerrrey (who immediately preceded him), George Norris, and I'm sure some others were more liberal.

Even Jim Exon was more centrist than Nelson.  I do give Nelson credit for supporting some traditional Democratic programs like WIC, school lunches and Head Start.  But then, so did Dan Coats...the former right winger from Indiana.
