I assume that any presidential successor will remain in office the way Truman, LBJ, and Ford all did.  This gives rise to presidencies for Douglas, Smathers, and Finch respectively.

37th: George Smathers (D-FL), January 20, 1961 - November 22, 1963
Vacant, November 22, 1963 - January 20, 1965
38th: Lyndon Johnson (D-TX), January 20, 1965 - January 20, 1969
39th: Robert Finch (R-AZ), January 20, 1969 - August 9, 1974

39th: Robert Finch (R-AZ), January 20, 1969 - August 9, 1974

Finch was from CA

But he was born in AZ (his father was a Congressman from AZ).  I believe there is some ridiculous clause which states that Pres and VP must be from different states.  With Nixon being from CA I'm sure they would do a Bush/Cheney move where they say he's from AZ.
