For my second installment we will discuss Rand Paul, the son of Ron Paul running in the Republican Primary for the US Senate seat in Kentucky.

My honest opinion, barring a major change in the electorate of the average GOP voter, Rand Paul is dead meat. From the interviews I've watched of him he seems like his father's son on the issues, only a lot less crazy. But that is the sad part, alot of the GOP finds Ron Paul to be crazy and just by guilt by association they will much easily vote for the mainstream GOP candidate over Rand. The fact that Rand agrees on a lot of the same issues also makes him dead in the water. He would've been much better off running for a House seat like his father did like 9000 years ago, the Senate is a bit too mainstream for even sane sounding paleocons like Rand Paul to have a shot.

And no I believe that while Rand Paul might run for president, I believe like his father he would have an energetic campaign it would still have the low numbers his father did. No way does he become president.

Sorry if I can't dredge up any optimism over Rand Paul, but it's going to have to take a hell of a change in the next few years for Rand to become a serious political force.

THoughts?

he's not capable of winning his primary,

Being the son of Ron Paul in Kentucky isn't like being the brother of JFK in Massachussetts or anything, and realistically the only thing he has going for him is his brand name....which means nothing in a KYGOP primary

I doubt he'll win the primary, but who knows?  This is the era of hope and change, right?

Paulite support is a mile wide and an inch deep. He won't win the primary.

Shouldn't it be a mile deep and and an inch wide? Meaning it's passionate but not very big?

Flash in the Pan

I don't like him, but if  he I had to choose between a democrat or Rand Paul. I'd choose Rand Paul.

But Paul will not win.

Looks like Rand Paul blew everyone out of the water in fundraising.

Paul also says he's saving all his money for a media blowout blitz in the spring.

It's gonna be a long race.

Ron Paul was never able to turn his funds into votes, we'll see if Rand will.

The differance between him and his dad here is that Rand Is actualy within striking distance. while not winning in the polls he tied up with the democrat in one and is moving closer to the other republican. His funding isint bad either so I dont see why he cant win.

Don't polls show Paul trailing Grayson by mere single digits?

Rand Paul? If this is a serious question, I shall give a serious response. Neither. This is a man who has no legitimate future politically. He is neither a flash in the pan nor a magic man.

The GOP finds Ron Paul crazy? No. On the contrary, the GOP is having a "Ron Paul moment." As NDN says, the Ron Paul movement and the tea party movement are one and the same.

Did I miss any primary polls on this race?

Anyways, there are certain parts of Kentucky you could certainly expect Rand Paul to do well in within a General Election (or Primary) framework.  Whether that's enough, eh, it's early...

People who believe in personal liberty don't fair well in Republican primaries.

If he drops some of his father's bad ideas (gold standard, isolationism) and associations he will be a great candidate.

That said, Ron Paul's most vocal supporters were 9/11 truthers, anti-government nutjobs, and racists. Plus Paul's far rightness on social issues (though he was state's rights).

So we'll see, I don't know enough about Rand to know if he has intelligent, if radical, positions, or not (like his father).

And...Constitutionalist libertarians who believe in personal liberty?

Far-right?  He supports same-sex marriage rights (but believes it to be a state issue), and he deeply opposes the Iraq War.  Doesn't sound far-right to me.
