Adam Carr's little description of the LDP has it about right:

It is officially a conservative party, but in fact is a collection of factions representing various business interests, and largely concerned with the accumulation and distribution of money to special interest groups.

There's very little point of such a party in opposition - which is why the question is legitimate. Though it must be noted that the PRI seems to be in rude health right now.

Probably not, but I wouldn't be surprised if a party named Jiyu-Minshuto won an election in the future. It would just be an unrecognizably changed version of the current LDP. What's pending right now is civil war in the party between the conservatives and the reformists. Whichever side loses will leave the party and form a new one.

It has already gained power again, through the DPJ...

Come on, "change"... with Ichiro Ozawa...

As for the LDP, I think that, yes, he will come back. Because the DPJ will fail before the LDP completely explodes !!
The LDP will come back and, then, spread itself in other parties, old and new.

The cynical view would be that there will be no LDP because the DPJ will be what the LDP was in the past.
This is certainly quite possible, but obviously not what I hope happens.

Certainly not. I've been predicting this for a while.

The cynical view would be that there will be no LDP because the DPJ will be what the LDP was in the past.

This is what I think will happen. The nearest example I can think of in the Western world is Alberta.

The PRI are quite a different thing in many ways to the LDP though. There's no revolutionary history for a start and there can be no real denying of what the LDP actually is, while the PRI could always the play the catch-all role (and had a long left-wing tradition within it). Actually the LDP reminds me most of (not surprisingly for me) is Fianna Fail (though some of what I said about the PRI applies to FF too).

The question is now whether the LDP will reform itself or not. The thing is, there is certainly a market of genuinely conservative party in Japan with mass support. Alot actually might depend on what position the new government takes (ideologically).
