Forecasting future unemployment is beyond futile.

I beg to differ. It is not always accurate, but it is often necessary to forecast to determine policies in regards to the budget and employment. Besides, there have been many cases where forecasts have been correct.

I'd like to see the data series the CBO uses. I'm afraid an advanced undergrad student could recreate the same forecast in Stata.

This doesn't take into account Clinton's 1995-2001 Republican Congress, Hoover's 1931-1933 Democratic Congress, etc.

Certain Presidents haven't had the most honest unemployment numbers, but yes, there does seem to be quite a correlation there.

Seemingly, if job creation in the US continues the current pace through the course of 2010, then more will have been created than during the entire eight years of George W Bush's presidency

That's very good news. However, keep in mind that Bush came into office during very low unemployment and had some decent job creation between 2004 and 2007. However, those two recessions really hurt his overall job creation record (together with the fact that there was much less potential for large job creation due to low unemployment at the start of his Presidency).
