What happened in the late 1970s had nothing to do with the problems created during the Clinton and Bush years.

That doesn't mean people are going to forget them. Even people born during/after the 1970s know a lot about the decade from their parents/grandparents and from learning about it in school, not to mention that McCain will frequently remain them about the 1970s on the campaign trail if Carter was his opponent.
