What is the actual delegate count at the moment?  Is there much talk of a brokered convention?  If a brokered convention was a live possibility, then I don't think Huckabee would withdraw from the race and offer an endorsement.  At most, he'd suspend his campaign and stay neutral, keeping his delegates as bargaining chips at the convention.

I was already posting the delegate count when I saw this.  A brokered convention is likely.  THe thing is, I didn't plan for that to happen; I'm going to make an edit to what Huckabee said.

It's going to be hard for them not to have a brokered convention.  There are 123 superdelegates who could go either way.  Stay tuned.

May 8, 2012 - Iran announces the completion of their first nuclear weapon.  While the Ayatollah insists it is only a precautionary measure, "seeing as The Jews could use theirs against us at any time".  President Clinton says that Iran will come to regret their decision soon enough.  The Indian/Pakistani standoff has intensified, with President Musharraf and President Ahmadinejad speaking routinely.  Israel and India have signed a Defense Pact.  Meanwhile, speculation has arisen over a possible nuclear conflict.  No UN employees have returned to Pakistan since the attempt on the Secretary-General's life.  No US Predator Strikes have occurred in Pakistan since the coup d'etat, and President Musharraf says that any strikes will be seen as an act of war.

July 2012

July 2, 2012 - Senator Thune criticizes Clinton for her inability to protect American citizens.  He says that Americans are afraid to go to stores because Clinton cannot protect them from radicals.  He vows that as President he will do whatever is necessary to protect American lives.

July 4, 2012 - The rebuilt southern wing of the Capitol Building is opened.  A memorial is placed outside to commemorate the lives lost there.

July 7, 2012 - British authorities stop an attempted terrorist attack in London.  Attacks were planned to take place at London's Heathrow Airport, the London Bridge Underground Station, outside Buckingham Palace, and the Tower Bridge.  Authorities did not learn of the attacks until July 5, but managed to stop all of them by the 7th, the intended date of the attacks.  The estimated death toll would have numbered about 800.

July 8, 2012 - Senator Thune again criticizes President Clinton, saying that British officials can stop attacks on their citizens, but President Clinton cannot.  The GOP releases ads showing tapes of the 1/27 attacks, the Subway Attack, and the Walmart Attack.  Although the ad is criticized and eventually pulled, it does the job intended.

July 18, 2012 - A shortlist for Senator Thune's vice presidential nominee is leaked.  Among them are:

  • Governor Sam Brownback of Kansas
  • Senator Sonny Perdue of Georgia
  • Former Governor Jeb Bush of Florida
  • Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts
  • Former Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas
  • General David Petraeus of New York
  • Senator Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma
  • Governor Rick Perry of Texas
  • Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana
  • Former Governor Jodi Rell of Connecticut

August 2012

August 3, 2012 - President Clinton makes an appearance in front of a joint session of Congress, speaking about the new proposed Public Works Department.  She refuted claims it would hurt any industry.  She said the plan would actually assist the private sector.  She said that the agency would give contracts to small, private companies.  Those companies would be responsible for hiring workers to do the jobs.  The plan consisted of 216 billion dollars in funding.  After the session, the public opinion of the plan is overwhelmingly positive.

August 9, 2012 - Senator Thune says he would support the creation of the Public Works Department, but says that restrictions must be given so that only companies that hire American workers are allowed to participate.

August 19, 2012 - India announces that Pakistani scientists had assisted Iran in it's nuclear weapons programs.  The United Nations immediately imposes sanctions on Pakistan.

August 23, 2012 - Senator John Thune says he would support an Indian/Israeli war against Pakistan and Iran.  He criticizes President Clinton for not being tough enough on Pakistan.  The GOP runs an ad where President Clinton contradicts her positions on Iran and Pakistan on multiple occasions.

August 28, 2012 - Senator John Thune announces her pick for the Republican Vice Presidential Nominee; Former Governor Jeb Bush of Florida.

September 2012

September 20, 2012 - The first debate between Senator John Thune and President Hillary Rodham Clinton is held.  The debate is focused on foreign policy and national security.  Senator Thune continues to criticize President Clinton for allowing three terrorist attacks to take place in the last year.  President Clinton attempts to use the death of Ayman al-Zawahiri to her advantage, but with little success.  Thune also criticizes her handling of the Pakistan situation, saying she backed down to Musharraf.  Clinton comes off as inept in the field of national security overall.

Who do you think won the debate?

August 23, 2012 - Senator John Thune says he would support an Indian/Israeli war against Pakistan and Iran.

Hmmmm.....I can imagine such a scenario occurring where American politicians were saying that the US should defend India and Israel if they're attacked first, and that we need to put a lot of pressure on Iran and Pakistan, but I think most of the emphasis would be on trying to defuse the situation, so as not to lead to a nuclear war.  Even if the US was really really ticked at Pakistan, they're not going to be eager to get involved in a nuclear war.  The way you worded it, it sounds like Thune is eager for war.

October 2012

October 3, 2012 - The Vice Presidential Debate is held.  It is divided into 9 equal segments.  It inevitably becomes focused around Florida politics, with each candidate pushing what they did for their home state.  Nelson pushes the idea that Presidents' Obama and Clinton initiatives succeeded in stopping a global recession and put Americans back to work (unemployment is resting at 7.3 percent).  Bush shows strength in foreign policy and national security; he cites polls that say that President Clinton is losing the election to Thune.  He says that the people no longer trust President Clinton, who once had overwhelming support.  Senator Nelson handles this critique better than Clinton, saying changes have been made in the Administration and saying that he is confident any new terrorist plots will be foiled.

Who do you think won the debate?

Nelson:  36%
Bush:  32%
Unsure/Tie:  32%

October 8, 2012 - The second Presidential debate is held.  The debate is focused on the economy.  President Clinton attempts to sell the Public Works Administration.  She says that neutral parties have suggested it would lower unemployment to 5.5 percent.  Senator Thune has no major complaints about the bill; he says it is one thing he and Clinton agree on.  Clinton pushes the success of her policies in lowering unemployment and stabilizing inflation at 3 percent.  She says that her new initiatives are expected to level inflation out at 0 percent, a claim Thune refutes.  Overall, Clinton is seen as strong in economic policy, and is regarded the winner of the debate.

Who do you think won the debate?

Clinton:  45%
Thune:  32%
Unsure/Tie:  23%

October 14, 2012 - The third Presidential debate is held.  It is a townhall style debate.  Notable discussions include Pakistan, education, and welfare reform.  While Thune once again comes across as strong in foreign affairs, Clinton's education initiatives are extremely popular.  Meanwhile, Thune says that welfare and social security reforms must be made.  He says that people must no longer be allowed to cheat the system; that if people do not want to work they should not get government support.  President Clinton says she supports reform as well, but she seems to be refuting her earlier positions.  Overall, there is no clear cut winner.

Who do you think won the debate?

Clinton:  33%
Thune:  33%
Unsure/Tie:  34%

October 25, 2012 - The President and First Vice President of Afghanistan are both killed after their helicopter crashes.  President Hamid Karzai is killed along with First Vice President Mohammed Fahim by Taliban insurgents after their helicopter is hit by a total of seven rockets.  It crashes into a mountain outside the city of Ghazni.  The helicopter is not recovered until seven hours later, and all of the 16 occupants died upon collision.  New President Karim Khalili calls for the complete eradication of the Taliban.  President Clinton announces a plan to send another 10000 troops to Afghanistan.

I wouldn't say eager.  He's prepared for it.  This situation is far worse than the 2001 standoff.  The fact is that the majority of people support it, and he's running an election.

Obviously both the US and UN are trying to diffuse the crisis, but at the same time, if Thune's elected and the war actually starts, Israel and India would have Thune's support.

Anyways, November's coming up soon...Any predictions?  Comments?

November

November 1, 2012 - Initial tallies show that a bill creating a Public Works Administration will pass the House handily.  Voting is scheduled for November 20 in the House, and December 1 in the Senate.

November 5, 2012 - The election is tomorrow, and the polling is closer than ever.  Senator Thune is behind President Clinton by a mere 0.8 of a percent, well within the 4 percent margin of error.

*I will post gubernatorial and senate elections first (in two separate posts)...Then the Presidential election will be posted in several different posts.*

In the mean time, who do you think will be elected?

A small win for Clinton, but maybe Thune wins the popular vote?
