Hughes narrowly defeats Wilson in 1916. The U.S. still enters WWI in 1917 and the war is over in late 1918. At Versailles, Hughes manages to convince Britain and France to adopt lenient conditions on Germany by threatening to cut off U.S. aid and loans to them if they didn't. Hughes also takes the U.S. into the League of Nations, with reservations. Hughes does not silence dissent and opposition at home during WWI like Wilson does. Finally, the U.S. economy goes into a recession in 1920 and unemployment is 10.3% on election day. The Republicans renominate Hughes, while the Democrats nominate William McAdoo. Who would win? Discuss, with maps.

Hah, this is basically my timeline except McAdoo instead of Wilson at the helm in 1920.

Just read "Vive Le Hughes" if you want to know what I think it will look like.

There is no third party candidate in this scenario though, who took away a lot of votes from Hughes in your TL.

Oops, yeah, forgot. I thought you were doing a version of my timeline just with McAdoo as the nominee.

Could you please do a map? I want to see what your opinion on this scenario is.

Well, had Hughes never silenced the protests, and even if he did, the country would have been moving increasingly to the other party. It would have been dismayed at the new state of affairs, and would reject the President. Plus, with unemployment rising and a weak economy, I couldn't see anything stopping McAdoo from winning.

Probably something like this:
