Good innings, that.

Lousy Leader, but a (very) good man. Also quite important as a writer, lest we forget. Guilty Men and the biography of Nye.

While he's remembered for the 1983 landslide defeat, it wasn't really his fault.

Rest in Peace.

Whoever put together one of the articles on the BBC site is sadly ignorant of political history:

Evidently there was no election in 1931...

Is that a pun or a typo?

It wasn't a typo, I'm not sure about pun or not.  I know it was stolen and not a dead0riginal.

He got his revenge for 1983 in 1997.

For some reason when I first heard this, the first thing that popped into my head was Guilty Men, and I completely forgot about 1983.

Well, yes, he helped with that too. Jesus, he was around for ages. He was 70 when he fought that election.

...to the point of being completely anti-choice. He supported getting rid of private healthcare and education and nationaising god knows how much... thank God, Thatcher beat him. Nevertheless, he was a good parliamentarian and he had principles at least, unlike the current useless lot.

I'd have to disagree about that. Certainly he was one of the most left wing (no matter how the term is defined), but a lot about his politics (and approach to it) came from the Liberalism of his family. Which is one reason why he was such a poor Leader; he lacked a proper understanding of the way the Party worked (and what its voters wanted) and was never able to find a way to overcome that.

He was (as far as is known) the last person left who fought a Parliamentary election in Britain during the interwar period (Monmouth, 1935). There's now just a single survivor of the '45 Parliament left (John Freeman).

Foot's death has made me realise one thing though; later this year it will be fifty years since Nye Bevan died.
