The 1968 election was not about Medicare or Social Security. The 2012 election will not be about healthcare.

Very possible. The American attention span just isn't that long.

We have two years for new scandals to emerge, I would agree.

I hope it isn't, It needs to be about Federal debt and deficit spending.

But it was about Civil Rights, simmering violence and societal upheaval which is sadly looking like in its essence a closer cousin of today's Conservative backlash against healthcare reform than the Democratic president's fight to create Medicare is.  Conservative anger to a progressive achievement will remain a factor in the election in some way, especially one where the Republican field is open, and it will manifest itself in whatever issue is most available.  And if Republicans run against healthcare with some success this year, they'll keep it alive for 2012.

Maybe not the general election, but the GOP primary campaign will be in full swing 1 year from now, and I find it hard to believe that health care won't be one of the top issues.  I mean, it's the most significant piece of legislation in Obama's presidency so far, and it's really unlike to be topped in the next 12-24 months.  Surely, it'll be part of the debate.

No election is about any one thing.

Do not forget that you may not have predictive powers.  A lot of really smart people on both sides of the aisle thought Iraq was going to be number one the most important issue in 2008 before the financial crisis hit.  McCain thought it was his greatest liability and Obama certainly planned his campaign on it.  Ended up being the economy.

If the Republicans are right, and they have to think they are, the current plan will be so destructive and oppressive and freedom-stealing that it will stay in the news and the public consciousness.  Who knows?  It could have a big impact in the primary and little impact in the general like Iraq was.

No offense, but the debt is and always has been a cold-button issue.

The economy, and "big government," both which includes the deficit, debt and Obamacare.

[It also includes the stuff Obama did that I agree with.]

Republican voters might believe what Republican politicians are telling them but I highly doubt Republican politicians do.

It's a lot easier to tell a lie if you convince yourself it's true first, most especially if you benefit personally.

Frank Rich articulates what I was trying to say about the protests against Healthcare Reform being more akin to the resistance to Civil Rights.
