But it was about Civil Rights, simmering violence and societal upheaval which is sadly looking like in its essence a closer cousin of today's Conservative backlash against healthcare reform than the Democratic president's fight to create Medicare is.  Conservative anger to a progressive achievement will remain a factor in the election in some way, especially one where the Republican field is open, and it will manifest itself in whatever issue is most available.  And if Republicans run against healthcare with some success this year, they'll keep it alive for 2012.

If the Republicans are right, and they have to think they are, the current plan will be so destructive and oppressive and freedom-stealing that it will stay in the news and the public consciousness.  

Republican voters might believe what Republican politicians are telling them but I highly doubt Republican politicians do.
