If Ford had picked Reagan (who he has only narrowly defeated for the nomination) as his running mate in the election of 1976, do you think a Ford/Reagan ticket could've defeated Carter that year?

Doubtful.

Ford was already maxed out in Reagan country out West.

Possibly.  Ford lost Wisconsin and Ohio by very slim margins...Perhaps Reagan could have pushed him over the top.

I agree with this. Reagan was more charismatic than Dole and had more potential to appeal to conservatives and to swing voters. With Reagan as VP, Ford might have energized the emerging conservative GOP base enough to pull off a narrow election win.

I remember this a few months ago. Ronald Reagan was overqualified to be a VP. The ticket would've looked backwards. That can be said for alot of politicians though. Although, I'm not sure what the Reagan would've said if he'd been asked.
