This is the first in a series of "Reverse What Ifs" I plan to post. In short, I will produce a map, and you must deduce the most likely year, and candidates, that would have resulted in such a map.

For above reasons, electoral vote totals are disabled, and, I've also removed popular vote shading. Normal atlas colouring is used for the parties.

That map doesn't make sense any year.

2008: Bill Richardson/Brian Schweitzer vs. Rudy Giuliani/Tom Ridge

Though even then, I think Giuliani could carry Wyoming and Idaho, just closer.

Why on earth would Richardson lose his fairly Democratic home state to a New York Republican?

I agree with those who say this map doesn't make sense in any modern election. If it was a pre-modern election, then it might make sense as a 1900 map with Bryan not advocating silver to win some pacifist NE states. That's all I could give you.

I would give 1988 as the year, but I can't fathom who the candidates would be.

What about them? There's others in the map that weren't states, I'm simply stating what the geographic balance looks like to me.
