I'm trying to imagine the first result of the 2010 U.S. House election being announced so dramatically...

I think we call Sunderland South Dixville Notch and Hart's Location here during Presidential races.

Was the Independent a left-winger?

Swings in US seats are totally untranslatable to others because people voting for House are not using that same vote to vote for the executive. Not true in Britain, so local swings are a bit more interesting for national purposes.

That said, the relatively strong showing by an Independent locally distorts what Sunderland South can say about the national result. The other Sunderland seats might be more telling.

An 8.4% swing would give the Tories an overall majority if it was repeated nationwide.

Believe I told Al a few days ago that I wouldn't be surprised in the LibDems underperformed a bit (because of movement back to Tories and Labour).  We'll see whether the exit polls are right or not on this one.

This would be more than "a bit" of underperforming, this would be essentially treading water with their 2005 result.

What it would say is that there was a lot of flirting that went on, and then things went back where they should be.  The numbers really aren't important here, just understanding that this movement was likely.

But according to the poll, it's not.  However, I don't believe the poll (although that's more based on its projection of losses for the Liberal Democrats).

LibDem vote down marginally in Sunderland South, but I suspect the Indie accounts a bit for that.

I think the key thing from Sunderland South is that the Tories only went up 5.2%.

Remember that the exit poll doesn't cover postal votes.

I find the BBC drone hectoring some poor Labor spokesperson saying Brown should just drown himself since he was rejected, a bit annoying. The BBC guy is getting beyond himself. Geez!

That's Jeremy Paxman. It's his job to be annoying.

Remember that the exit poll doesn't cover postal votes.

Which is one of the things that the Liberal Democrats keep talking about - saying that most postal votes came in while they were at their peak.

Are they allowed to count the postal votes early or do those have to wait for the polls to close at 10pm.

I personally believe a labor majority in a narrow election.
