Reagan does not ask people if they are better off than they were four years ago. Also, Carter manages to secure the release of the hostages right before the election. This leads to Carter defeating Reagan in 1980 by an extremely narrow margin. Due to the efforts of Fed Chairman Paul Volcker, hyperinflation is defeated and the economy begins to recover. Inflation is at 4% and unemployment is at 7.5% on election day 1984. In 1984, the Democrats nominate Carter's VP, Walter Mondale. The GOP, feeling that Reagan lost because he was too conservative (just like Goldwater), decide to nominate George Bush Sr., a moderate. Mondale emphasizes the economic recovery and the reduced inflation rate, while Bush Sr. attacks the Democrats for being incompetent and argues that he could do a better job regarding the economy and reducing the unemployment rate. Bush Sr. also argues that Carter's foreign policy is too soft and that it led to the Iranian Revolution and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Who would win? You pick the VPs. Discuss, with maps.
