Well, even more than Hitler's aides and satraps, this is my favourite survivor.
Kal has already done, last year, a very pleasant Stalin inner circle, but here, I've include all the 1917-1991 period.

Here are the most important Politburo members (either full members or candidate members: the dates are between brackets).
Of course, there are some exceptions, as 4 guys were never in the Politburo, but were important enough, in their time, for me to include them (Radek, Tukhachevskyi, Yagoda, Pavlov).

Many choices are of course disputable. I know it, but I needed to have a similar number of names in each group...
Many guys aren't easily put in only one category (Mikoyan, Suslov, Kosygin, for example, as they served many masters and behaved in very different ways during their life); some aren't really linked to any category (Zhukov, e.g.).
I wanted to have a "reformist" group, without the old khrushchevians. But it would have been too small (only Gorbachev, Yeltsin, Yakovlev and Shevardnadze).
Between "khrushchevians" and "modern conservatives", the border is tenuous. Some kremlinologists would kill me to put Andropov in the "khrushchevians"... Wink. Trotsky would have made a group of his own...
And when it's written "open", it doesn't mean "cool"... Wink It's just that the guys were able to evolve from their original basis.

"Bolsheviks":
2 Vladimir Ulyanov LENIN He was the first responsible
1 Lev Bronstein TROTSKIY He may have been as bad as Stalin, or even worse

"Open bolsheviks":
2 Grigoriy Radomyslskiy ZINOVYEV Very rude, even if purged
1 Nikolay KRESTINSKIY I find him uninteresting

"Stalinists":
2 Iosif Dzhugashvili STALIN Just one word: Stalin
1 Nikolay YEZHOV An uninteresting and short-lived monster

"Open stalinists":
1 for Anastas MIKOYAN More deeply implicated in stalinist repression than was thought; not really reformist; a big, big opportunist
2 for Georgiy ZHUKOV Politically unstable

"Brezhnevians":
2 Konstantin CHERNENKO Drunk, stupid, corrupt, dangerous
1 Sharaf RASHIDOV Remember the cotton scandal in Uzbekistan ?

"Modern conservatives":
1 Gennadiy YANAYEV Moron and coup-maker
2 Heidar ALIYEV Local satrap who was very opportunistic

"Khrushchevians":
2 Nikolay SHVERNIK First a classical stalinist
1 Dmitriy POLYANSKIY (1958-1976) Just a minor one... The last name I've added on the list Wink

I'm honoured the great survivor fans are in ! Wink
And with fine picks (Kosior, Postyshev).

But Kirilenko, why Kirilenko ? Sad
So mysterious (could he turn in a second Chernenko or was he like the young Shelepin ?), a possible Brezhnev successor between, what, 1976 and 1980, something like that...
TBH, I think he wasn't brilliant, but he was a real enigma for kremlinology Wink

If there is a complete tie, you know what I'll do Wink
(but I've PMed Kal, GMantis and ag, those who are really interested in the USSR)

Our first big purge...

And 3 ties for me to solve... I've picked the less interesting ones historically (Krestinskiy over Zinovyev and Frunze, Zhukov over Mikoyan: political history, Yanayev over Aliyev, Kosygin and Kirilenko).

Bolsheviks:
Eliminate: Lenin - Stasova (yep, I change a bit... Wink Stasova is uninteresting)
Keep: Sverdlov (just a tactical vote)

Open bolsheviks:
Eliminate: Zinovyev - Kamenev (well, you can't cut the pair Wink)
Keep: Frunze (not a great one, but an original mind in a way)

Stalinists:
Eliminate: Yezhov - Yagoda (what a fine duet !)
Keep: Beriya (my hero ! Wink

Open stalinists:
Eliminate: Mikoyan - Saburov (those minor bureaucrats bore me)
Keep: Ordzhonikidze (Sergo is so pittoresque in Stalin'slandscape...)

Brezhnevians:
Eliminate: Rashidov - Tikhonov (corrupted and grey)
Keep: Suslov (you can't oust this mastermind so early !)

Modern conservatives:
Eliminate: Aliyev - Pavlov (let's keep ousting opportunistic and boring ones)
Keep: Kirilenko (another hero ! Wink)

Khrushchevians:
Eliminate: Polianskiy - Khrushchev (well, he was so loyal to Stalin...)
Keep: Andropov (in case he is threatened)

Well, I'm a bit disappointed Kal (and others, of course) didn't vote in this round... Sad

Again 2 ties for me to solve... You could think I really protect Kirilenko but, still, I see him as more important in the political history of the Soviet Union. Aliyev was of course essential to Azerbaïdjan's history, but he wasn't a big guy before 1982 and, after the death of Andropov, he has quickly been sidelined, being not a Brezhnevian and then being a corrupt conservative under Gorbachev.
As for Mikoyan, I again save him against grey Saburov.
With more votes in now, we should avoid these ties in the following rounds.

Just to be sure it's clear (I should have said it before, sorry):
the "keep" votes will count only to break a tie during the round, I won't take them into account as previous votes in the following rounds (except if there is a new tie: then, they'll count).
So, they are a bit less important than in the other survivor.

Bolsheviks:
Lenin
(I know my vote is doomed, but I keep on voting because he was "overvalued" and because, "kremlinologically" speaking, he isn't very interesting)

Open bolsheviks:
Kamenev
(after Zinovyev, it's logical; and the others in this group are pretty interesting guys; and I try to oust the most opportunistic)

Stalinists:
Yagoda
(after Yezhov, another bureaucratic and not-at-all bright evil)

Open stalinists:
Mikoyan
(Pervukhin, after Saburov, is tempting, but I have a big distaste for opportunistic Mikoyan)

Brezhnevians:
Rashidov
(corrupt, autocratical, moronic)

Modern conservatives:
Pavlov
(minor, ridiculous, inefficient)

Khrushchevians:
Khrushchev
(overvalued, stalinist and murderous when it was fit to be so; and the others in this group, except maybe Kuusinen, are more interesting)

Dear Mr.X,
Shcherbitsky is already out.
Do you vote for Gretchko (your other choice in this group during the previous round) ?

To all of you:
BTW, soon, I'll reduce the number of votes in each round, so that it's a bit easier for you to vote...
On the other hand, for the moment, I don't update this survivor for at least 48 hours, so that you've got time to think if you want.

Thanks again for voting in it.

Including the round I'm opening now, there will be 6 rounds in which we'll eliminate 7, then 4, then 3 Politburo members. And so, we'll still use the 7 groups.
After that, we'll have only one big group and we'll purge the Politburo members one by one, but still with sophisticated rules (Wink): I know you love them... and the turnout is too low to stick to usual rules (Sad).

Bolsheviks:
Lenin 2
(trying a small Blitzkrieg Wink)

Open bolsheviks:
no vote
(because I don't really care for anyone here, except maybe Rykov)

Stalinists:
no vote
(well, now that Beriya is out, I don't really care, even though I'd like to see Vyshinskiy, Kaganovich and Andreyev out soon)

Open stalinists:
Shepilov 1
(I must protect "Sergo", you know... it's a bit stupid as I'm trying to kill a funny if short-lived coup-monger Tongue)

Brezhnevians:
no vote
(Suslov and Ponomarev aren't threatened and, with luck, Rashidov will be ousted without my help... of course, we may lose Grechko... but this round is full of forced choices !)

Modern conservatives:
Chebrikov 2
(Kirilenko and now Romanov threatened... my favourite bad guys in this group -if you consider Andropov and Lukyanov as "good" guys !-... I must act !)

Khrushchevians:
Kozlov 2
(maybe it's a mistake to give 2 points here, but Shelepin deserves my protection Wink)

My second big "loss", after Beriya: Shelepin... It would have been so fascinating had his attempt to seize power succeeded... Wink A, man of so many "what-ifs". In relations with the Soviet block, he would have probably been more moderate than the so-called moderate Brezhnev, Kosygin and even Podgorniy. And he may have been able to reform the economy a bit more efficiently than Kosygin.
Of course, you may argue his image was overvalued, like all the other "potential" reformers from the KGB (Beriya, Andropov), who may have been able to intoxicate foreigners and to have "friends" contributing to build a positive if fake image.

I'm a bit sad Trotskiy is out before Lenin, who was less complex and more opportunistic. But the rules weren't easy to use efficiently ! Wink
Edu was good at them (being the last to vote is of course easier, in a way): he has ousted Sokolnikov with just one vote.
This round may provide other examples...

Romanov, a corrupt and erratic guy, but so fascinating, is safe and I'm happy. Under Andropov, he had a short "golden period", talked of as a potential Nr.1. The fight between Romanov and Gorbachev, the latter using some of the old Brezhnevians (especially Gromyko) and Romanov depending on so-called reformists (who were just "modern conservatives") like Vorotnikov and Solomentsev, was very interesting.

Postyshev was another "pittoresque" guy, like Kirov, "Sergo",... Many of them in the 1930s, but also in the 1950s (Zhukov, Shepilov, Mr. K himself).
But, well, Postyshev wasn't an angel, even though he was close to Kirov...

Rashidov is out, sorry jdb, but this corrupt and nasty guy was a good resume for the last years of brezhnevism.

With a good news (Lenin) came a bad news (Romanov): of course, it would be the other way round for some of you Tongue.

When you see that the fight was between Vyshinskiy and Dzerzhinskiy, well, it's really a "bad guys" survivor !
Edu didn't manage to keep Lenin, but killed Radek and Kozlov. Hans and jdb votes neutralized each other in the Brezhnevian and open Bolsheviks groups.

Anyway, sooner or later (and maybe rather sooner than later), Gromyko, Grechko, Dzerzhinskiy, Malenkov will all fall, as their count is higher and higher and as it's now difficult to "legitimately" protect them (the same is right for Kirilenko, BTW Grin).

Kuznetsov is purged: what is amazing in him is that, before being a paragon of "jurassic" brezhnevism in 1977-1986, he was a "young Turk" of open stalinism and then khrushchevism in the 1950s...
So many of these guys should be put in a big "remorseless opportunists"... (which is precisely what made them dangerous, as nothing counted apart from their own interest inside a dictatorship)

Sorry for my erratic updating of round number... But I see the "loyal" voters are still here Wink

0.75 Chubar / 0.25 Rudzutak (Chubar is less "original" than Rudzutak)

0.75 Tukhachevskiy / 0.25 Bukharin (Tukhachevskiy was a good marshal but not a democrat niether a fine "politician"; and Bukharin was, I think, the less kind of the 3 "rightists")

0.75 Kaganovich / 0.25 Andreyev (well, I'm a bit ashamed not voting for "Iron Feliks" Tongue ... but Kaganovich and Andreyev were the most loyal Stalinists, both evil and dull)

0.75 Bulganin / 0.25 Malenkov (it's really difficult here: Kuybyshev was a very serious and harsh guy and his "mysterious" death - not so mysterious of course - is a "fine" end; Kirov and Ordzhonikidze have fascinating careers and ends also; Malenkov could have made history, in economy and international relations, but he was a coward and was always overestimated; I don't hate Bulganin at all, but he is the least interesting here)

0.75 Ustinov / 0.25 Gromyko (Ustinov really became a paragon of brezhnevian "icing" and he wasn't a bright guy; Gromyko was a nasty human being, but he helped Gorbachev prevailing over Grishin in the end: I've never liked Gromyko but he has a "special" career...)

0.75 Zaykov / 0.25 Kosygin (Zaykov is the least interesting of the lot and, well, I still try to save Kirilenko Wink; Kosygin is really overvalued and was very harsh in political and international matters)

0.75 Podgorniy / 0.25 Yeltsin (a disappointing and unimportant guy; an erratic and, first, not so efficient one, if we take into account his Soviet period: I don't judge the Russian president here, but the regional satrap; of course Yeltsin was used by Gorbachev to appear centrist and was funny when he was party head in Moscow, but we have to pick someone...)

Should I delete this thread ? Grin
Kirilenko is out... what can I say... time for revenge Cheesy
What is more, with this stupid basket-baller Andrei Kirilenko, I was unable to find a photo of Andrei Kirilenko (the real one) alone. So, it's just a photo of the 1981 Politburo (Kirilenko is just to the right of Gromyko)

Well, poor Bulganin: no previous votes and he is now unanimously purged !
The "stalinist" group begins to be interesting as we've got real bad guys (Feliks, Zhdanov, Molotov, Andreyev) and that it seems that we have some entrenched camps...

A big name is out with Bukharin but, indeed, his "good" image is mostly due to reaction to what Stalin did towards him. Bukharin wasn't especially a kind guy and a democratic one.

Grechko and Gromyko are still here but for how long ?
BTW, jdb, why these votes against Grechko ? He was more a professionnal and a technician (not a bad one, even if its by Soviet standards...) and he was probably more moderate than, say, Kosygin, on international matters (or on Czechoslovakia 1968 for example). Just out of curiosity...

It's OK, Edu.
A bit too sophisticated, eh ? Wink
I don't even anticipate well the real effect of my rules... At least, that's funny.

Oh, and about revenge... given what you say, let's talk about "vendetta" now Grin
So, for Kirilenko (and Shelepin, which is almost worse Wink), I'll pursue a revenge forever !

What do you think, Edu and jdb, should I keep on ?
We are just 4 and I think we can't afford losing another one, even for 1 or 2 rounds.
But if you want me to update quickly, no problem.

Even if Hans hasn't voted, Gromyko is eventually out ! And with Grechko ! They were really tied since the beginning.
Andreyev, a real bad one even though not very well-known, very loyal to Stalin, is also eliminated.
Zaykov, who was wrongly thought in 1986 to be an anti-Ligachev for Gorbachev and to be an efficient manager and who disappointed everybody, disappears without greatness.

Malenkov, Preobrazhenskiy and Molotov are saved but after ties.

With Hans not reporting, I slow things down a bit: we'll purge only 3 this round and 2 during next round.

bolsheviks:
eliminate PREOBRAZHENSKIY

open bolsheviks:
eliminate TUKHACHEVSKIY

stalinists:
eliminate MOLOTOV
eliminate DZERZHINSKIY

open stalinists:
eliminate MALENKOV

brezhnevians:
keep SUSLOV
(I love the clever evils Wink)

modern conservatives:
eliminate KOSYGIN
keep LUKYANOV
(Lukyanov is the most interesting in this group: a sort of Andropovian hidden in a grey brezhnevian career, then an essential administrator for Gorbachev, then a half-supporter of the 1991 coup-plotters. And what I also know is that Raïssa Gorbacheva and Mrs Lukyanova hated each other Wink Kremlinology is a serious matter Cheesy)

khrushchevians:
keep SHEVARDNADZE
(hope I won't regret not to have tried to save another guy... Wink)

I already regret my vote for Malenkov, who could have been someone but who tried too much to please everyone and, each time he chose (which was pretty rare), chose the bad side... An interesting guy Wink !
I should have voted for Voroshilov... Sad

3 clear winners here, with unanimous vote for them. Some bad guys seem to be pretty resilient and that's a good thing (Dzerzhinskiy, Molotov, Zhdanov, Suslov). No "pure" stalinist has been eliminated ! And 2 brezhnevians have received "keep" votes, though none has received a negative vote !

For the last time, we are going to purge more than one Politburo member. I hope the present rule isn't too harsh... As I define them in advance, they may have weird effects sometimes, when they occur... That's part of the fun !

"Bolsheviks":
