Let's assume (I know that's an unlikely scenario) for the purpose of the alternate history that following the World War II allies decided, against common sense, to split Germany into smaller states (new eastern borders and iron curtain itself remains the same, ftr) and that's remained into an effect today.

So what states would we have? Bavaria for sure, maybe Prussia (or two Prussias, one Democratic and one Communist, possibly uniting after 1989).

1945-1990

Capitalist States (8 states)
Schleswig Holstein
Lower Saxony
Rhineland-Westphalia Palatinate (North Rhine-Westphalia) & (Rhineland-Palatinate)
Saarland
Hessen
Baden Wuttenberg
Bavaria
West Berlin (City-State)

Communist States (5 states)
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Brandenburg
Saxony-Anhalt (Sachen Anhalt) & (Saxony)
Thuringen
East Berlin (City-State)

Sorry, but don't know how to input maps. The communist states all consist of the borders of DDR. Berlin remains the same with division. All members of western states join EEC (EU) whilst all members of eastern states join Warsaw Bloc. In 1989, all eastern states revolt against communism and become democratic states within the EEC. Berlin merges into one state as well as other East-West states merging.

1990-present (9 States)

Saxony (Lower Saxony & Saxony Anhalt)
Berlin (East Berlin & West Berlin)
Hesse-Thurnigen (Hesse & Thurnigen)
Bavaria
Brandenburg
Nord-Land (Schleswig-Holsten) & (Mecklenburg-Vorpummen)
Rhineland-Westphalia
Saarland
Baden-Wuttenburg

At the start of WWI there was some talk of a division of the Empire into constituent states, with the re-establishment of Hanover (presumably pro English, possibly with George V on the throne).

The Bavarians are going to be very upset with you.  If a Bavarian-Austrian anschluss were to happen, Bavaria would be the larger part.  But not by very much, so a neutral name such as German Danubia would probably be chosen.
