This question has been bothering me and I have yet to find anyone who knows a definite answer. It's probably pretty simple, but are they considered part of the executive branch or the judicial branch?

Well, if you're talking about Federal Attorneys then they are part of the executive branch.  cite

It depends on the government.  As noted by deadOman earlier, in common law countries, such as the U.S., public prosecutors are considered part of the executive branch. However, in civil law countries, they are usually grouped with the judges within the civil service, as civil law countries don't typically have a distinct judicial branch.  Note also that prosecutors need not be part of the government, tho the use of a private prosecutor rarely happens these days.

Prosecutors in the US are executive branch, whether local municipality, county, state or the feds.

Ernest, what do you mean in referring to "private prosecutors"? A prosecutor outside the government is an animal I've never heard of.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_prosecution

It's essentially a historical phenomenon and mainly a libertarian daydream these days, but it still happens rarely.
