Let's say Gerald Ford makes another run for the Presidency in 1980, and manages to beat out Ronald Reagan for the Republican Nomination, picking Reagan ally Paul Laxalt as his Vice Presidential nominee and winning Reagan's begrudging endorsement. On the Democratic side, Ted Kennedy manages to narrowly succeed in outprimarying Jimmy Carter, and chooses Lloyd Bentsen as his Vice Presidential Nominee. Carter reluctantly supports Kennedy but does not campaign for him. Everything else stays the same.

Discuss with maps.

Though I think this scenario is much more likely if Ford loses the nomination to Reagan in '76, then Carter beats Reagan that year, and then Ford tries a comeback in 1980.

The same exact as in RL except that the Republicans win GA and MN (no Carter/Mondale).

Ford/Laxalt (R) 497
Kennedy/Bentsen (D) 41
